John
WEST Douglas voters will get a chance to quiz the Keys candidates in May 23’s by-election in a requisition meeting held at All Saints’ Church Hall, Alexander Drive, Douglas, on Wednesday between 7pm and 9.30pm. Four candidates are fighting the election, which is being held after the election of Geoff Corkish to Legislative Council. http://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/isle-of-man-news/meet-the-candidates-of-douglas-west-by-election-1-5662299

thebees
I amuse myself in many different ways, why only this morning I had the thought to ask why Gill and the other one thought themselves fit to stand against a man of Chris Thomas' calibre? I did have to laugh. Please take your time to read http://chris-thomas-for-douglas-west.com have a quick deco at his biography, I knew he was smart but had underestimated exactly how smart! Way smart. Oh and he plays Double Bass too, thats him in the band

That was a very good read and i take my hat off to CT for what he has done. We need a few more of his caliber at the helm of our ship.
thebees
Way ace! I went thinking "One horse in this race" but.....Hmmmm this is not the case at all, they all came across really well, Dawson is shifty but he has middle class vote winning strategy all worked out, Gill stormed it on crime and punishment, Skinner has some good points and is a nice local man and Thomas showed his superior knowledge & promises to keep to his manifesto. Great meeting and well attended - standing room only. It would be really great if loads of voters got themselves out on the day and voted, I'm not so sure of who will win anymore, they all have appeal to different sectors of our community, the question is, who will do the best for the Island? Obvs my mind is not for the changing but, I'm a bit nervous my vote will not be enough. Never mind the record breaking 3 legged race, lets smash the record for a turn out at a by-election
cheeky boy
A packed meeting, many people stood in the doorway and some even sat on the floor The Dawson fella looked like perfect Tynwald fodder, no fresh ideas, tough on crime etc.etc. another drone with his sights set on 50 grand a year and a ticket to the old boy's club. Had a rather spooky demeanor which put me in mind of Laurence Olivier in Marathon Man Skinner: nice bloke, good town councillor Quinten Gill came across very well as you would expect from a man with several years in parliament and probably would have walked it if it wasn't for Chris Thomas Thomas was outstanding, his grasp of the facts & figures made the rest look like chancers. Plenty of fresh thinking, good ideas and on an intellectual level stood out like a racehorse in a donkey derby

If the Lib Vannins held their AGM in a phone box that would be packed too. ,Remember the Lido ? well All Saints church hall is nearly as big as the Lido toilets About 200 turned up, not all of them could get in IMHO...Even with a 'Packed' requisition meeting, and coming across as good, there are at least 3 major worries I have about Chris Thomas and his campaign. 1. I have been to many a requistition meeting over the years, and while these meetings may influence some. These meetings also often contain a large number of people that have, actually, already made their mind up who they are voting for (no doubt including the bees and Cheeky Boy etc.). Candidates tend to turn up with many of their existing supporters/nominees. Also, in my experience, many of the better speakers can still come second or third (e.g. Theo FleurBay was one last time). My points being, even a good requisition meeting: a) can provide a false sense of security to a candidate b) if 200 turn up it is still only a small percentage of the turnout (turnout usually around 1800 at a by election) that represents only around 5% to 10% of the voters on the day. 2. His manifesto. We are currently one week from election day and his manifesto online looks like this: 3. His election messages are appearing complex, and are not prioritised properly. e.g. people are interested firstly in the economy, health, cuts, immigration etc. etc. long before 'governence'. He needs to up his game, or what sounds like the two sound-byte specialists chasing his heels may well overtake him. Analysis is for after the election, far simple messages and prioritisation are for before. ETA: I wonder also who, if anyone, Corkish might be sharing his teller type info with? Was he mates with Gill? Teller info can really give an advantage, in the sense that a candidate knows which third of the houses to visit that are actually likely to turn out, and not waste 67% of his time knocking on doors, generally to no avail. . . Shake me up Judy
I hope the best candidate wins, but in Manx politics this isn't always the case, and many voters prefer the shaved monkey to the man who knows what he's talking about. The traditional Manx voter doesn't like change, doesn't like 'large orders' and smart asses, or people who use big words. I wasn't impressed with Dawson on Manx Radio the other morning, and thought he sounded like a Home Counties new Tory; and Gill comes across as so far up his own ass that he lacks flexible thought and sense. It sounds like Chris Thomas is the best candidate but it won't do him any harm to butter up the traditional voters in the remaining days, and give them some 'Corkish'. I wonder can he sing ?
