I am looking at a medal (the Donegal Medal) I won 50 years ago as a junior member of Diggle Rifle & Revolver Club, shooting a SMLE .303 with target sights. Of course, the cooler kids had already gone metric (7.62mm). Was a great hobby I shared with my dad - keep thinking I should maybe get back into target shooting.

I used to shoot at Diggle occasionally, mainly just for sight calibration. It's an excellent sport , but too noisy for my knackered ears these days.

those new slow moving MHK  targets would be a good start.

Probably a #4 which went on to become the L42A1 by the addition of a 7.62mm floating barrel plus modified magazine etc etc

On single shot load at 200 yards I could get 5 rounds into a 2-inch group in just 25 seconds.

You know what you can do with your moving parts rubbish....

Anyone here remember, um, the SLR?

best weapon around at the time. Possibly still miles ahead of the shite they issue soldiers with these days IMO

Typical manxforum thread

1. Post about police armed with rifles on our streets for days.

2. Poster says its not true because it’s not on facebook.

3. Someone says police don’t have rifles

4. Discussion about the finer points of rifles..

5. Thread dies

6. Nobody else who has seen the police on Athol street even comments

MF used to be a vibrant discussion platform - now its become a bit dull

Not sure if that's true. After all, the gimpy is still in use how many years after it was first issued?

Has the vibrant "finger on the pulse" manx media picked up on it yet?

By the way Derek, when you rang your ex-colleagues about it what did they say?  :)

The vibrant Manx media are waiting for a press release before they report it ;-)

A colleague rang the Police and asked why they were there - They were told they were there for "operational reasons" - I'm much happier knowing that.

The worry would be that they were there for non-operational reasons !

All to do with attrition of enemy logistics (and NATO standardisation). The SLR 7.62 is more likely to kill, first shot. Game over.

5.56mm whilst certainly capable of being fatal, is more likely to wound, thus tying up enemy time and resources in dealing with their wounded.

It's also easier for more soldiers to fire accurately, not having the kick of the 7.62mm (which does damage bragging rights, admittedly).

If we had to shoot at somebody, we would prefer they didn't get up again, hence my fondness for the SLR.
