I saw the comments in the meejah and looked at the Tynwald website.  The answer this week on consultant pay is like, OMG!  Here is an extract

In 2018/19 the forecast total gross payment (based on Q1 outturn) to the top-ten consultant earners at Noble’s Hospital is £2,422,699 (range: £279k - £226k). The average gross payment associated with the top ten consultant earners in this period is £242,270 which is £114,587 (89.1%) higher than the gross average pay of male consultants in the UK. During this period the number of consultants on the payroll at Noble’s had increased to 56. It is forecast that the consultant gross pay bill will increase to £9,640,365. Gross salary payments to the top-ten consultant earners in this period equates to 25.1% of the total forecast consultant pay bill.

What is going on?

It takes a lot to entice......???

Or, are they coming here because we offer so much???

Yes, market forces come into it, if we are willing to pay 2000 quid for a 'bloody' television, why shouldn't a skilled person demand similar recompense?

Which comes first, our willingness to pay or the necessity to pay?

There has long been a societal norm that doctors, especially surgeons/consultants and other hospital specialists, are altruistic Demi-gods to whom we should all doff our caps and be respectful and grateful. This is incorrect. They are self-interested mercenaries. Do you think I’m cynical? Well that’s not my view - it’s the opinion of the nationally respected surgeon married to my cousin who heads a huge surgical unit at a major London teaching hospital. Take it as you will. But while on the subject - the IOM is paying 74% more to Consultants than the going rate in the U.K. Really? Are they 74% better here? Do the health authorities in Jersey need to do the same? No wonder Ashford has grudgingly admitted that just a few months into the financial year his Department is a million overspent. One last question...are we paying nurses 74% more than their U.K. equivalent..? No, I didn’t think so.

THIS WEEK:

Local Doc: Ooh that's serious...need to investigate that with an MRI.

Patient: So I need an MRI, when can you do one?

Doc (talking directly on phone to consultant at Nobles): In around 3 weeks. Do you have private company medical insurance?

Patient: Er...yes.

Doc: How are you fixed for this evening?

Who authorises these people to use our equipment for high consultancy rates to jump queues?

Ok so they are self interested mercenaries but these people either save lives, extend length of life or significantly improve quality of life. When you put their pay alongside top end bankers, sportsmen,  entertainers, celebrities, et al, then I really don’t question what they’re being paid.

Yeah, this is a savage problem, and absolutely how it is. Two tier health service.

This has gone on for decades Albert; and no minister, no chief executive, and none of the army of managers they've employed has been able to do anything about it. Someone I know was asked to pay cash (no cheques) for a private consultation. It's a plain brown envelope, tax free, cash culture and has been for many years.

Everyone takes a slice out of the cake with private appointments. I believe the consultants, radiographers, pathology etc are supposed to pay for the use of the hospital out of their charges?

I'm sure wrighty will be able to confirm or deny this but I'm reliably informed that there are locum consultants earning £500,000 pa at Nobles!

I agree with the sentiment, but two or three times what their uk counterparts would be paid?
