Well Gil certainly left for Spain pronto with oodles of stolen cash largely raised by using a fraudulent will that named himself as the executor and witnessed by a couple of his pseudonyms.

For the couple of years or so before the bank finally collapsed they managed to fiddle the books to show the bank was in credit when it was hopelessly doomed and in debt.

And a collapsed trial duly ensued with nobody brought to account.

The IoM - Where you most certainly could then. And probably still can in lots of areas.

I hope he mentioned the Queenie situation to the Krankie.

The Good Baron has announced that this year's quotas are to be reduced by up to 40% in order to preserve stocks.

Which is probably an admission that they were raped beyond sustainability last year.

Which everybody knew. Let's see how long it lasts.

Indeed it was, though @gettafa's point about rose-tinted glasses still applies (and of course the problems started there back in the 70s).  Interesting to be reminded:

The UK clearly didn't hesitate to interfere in the matters of the Island when it felt the locals were not managing things well - though the constitutional position was slightly burred then by the LG still being the Presiding Officer of Tynwald.

The UK had to interfere, the Isle of Man Government, legal system, police etc simply couldn't cope.

Perhaps UK should have stepped in when the trial collapsed but it was very much in their interests for the whole matter to be swept under the carpet. Over a period of decades questions were asked in the House of Commons about reports into associated companies of the SIB, but despite continued attempts they were never released, and were quite recently ordered to be destroyed by the Business Secretary.

TBF though, anyone taking a punt at a bank offering higher rates than any other bank deserved what they get / got for their greed. No sympathy whatsoever.

I don't think they care whether we manage things "well" or not. Rather, they care that we manage things in a way that serves their interest.

Yes. Sometimes UK interests and the IOM being run well may align. More often than not, their interests are served by them not paying much attention to us at all.

76, thought it was 82?

Things were swept under the carpet, and the Isle of Man moved on.

Someone came up with the slogan "Lessons have been learned" and it has been the staple motto of IoM Government ever since

This from March 1983, Manx Life Magazine:

The main lesson being "We're gonna need a bigger carpet".  And ever-bigger and thicker carpets have been paid for ever since.

Carpets have been laid on top of carpets in order to smooth out the lumps.
