Apparently we need more accountants

Notwithstanding that we probably do why haven’t we been encouraging more students to do accountancy at the UCM or offering incentives to locals to re train in accounting rather than doing what we always do which is throw a shit load of money at people who don’t even live here to come here and get a job? We did the same with nurses years ago when we stopped training them locally. It does make you wonder what chance at all locals have of progression in the future Manx economy?

The future economy will be run by hitech for the benefit of the top 5% who own the technology, leaving little for the rest of us

Unless government makes significant inroads into the ownership of said tech on our behalf

There's been a shit load of these stories about living on/returning to the island lately. Wonder how much IOM newspapers are getting paid for these and whether each story should be classed as 'advertisement feature'?

See the 'Destination Isle of Man' stories actually top the www.iomtoday.co.im news agenda now

Is government paying for this?

It isn't that simple though is it? Becoming an Accountant isn't particularly easy.  A lot of study, a lot of cost.  It also isn't a massively interesting sector unless you have a real passion for it.

It is that easy. We’re offering up to £10K relocation and an NI holiday. Surely it makes more sense to have started to pump the money into the education system years ago so that locals benefit and come out of school with good jobs the economy needs? You don’t need any real qualifications to start an accountancy course. It’s just time and money which the DfE could happily subsidize if it wanted to but we seem to prefer to chuck money at everyone but locals these days.

You clearly have no idea what becoming an Accountant involves.   You dont need any "real qualifications"?

The reality is not many people have the aptitude and more importantly the interest to get into accounting.  It isn't a doddle to qualify.  It's a number of years studying and very difficult to achieve the required results.

I'd rather see money pumped in to support people doing Degrees (both here and away).

Accountancy is spending your time dealing with 0 - 9 with the odd +, ÷, ×, () thrown in. Except for IOMG where there are lots and lots of () thrown in!

It takes the sort of aptitude that would make you faint with boredom down the pub...

You're doing a great job of showing the opposite.

You seem to be doing a good job of arguing with posters just for the hell of it. As I’ve said above I’m fully conversant with what is required to qualify as either a certified or chartered accountant and I don’t see why we shouldn’t be assisting locals if the jobs are in such demand before we subsidize people to come here.
