  1. Right up there with that tunnel linking Jersey, Guernsey and France. They'd be better off with a monorail.
  2. Because it's Government.
  3. Local politics is the same as national politics and people have realised that you cannot trust a word any of them say. It’s just a club for some to join with connections in the right places.
  4. Not something you'll have to worry about Stu.
  5. ..or you could just dump it round my way. Four vehicles in the last few weeks, 2 of them out of tax, 2 running out soon. One of them on UK pates has not been taxed for 2 years. Another not taxed since April last year. Out of the other two, 1 shows as no insurance and the other is obviously a fucking shed and will stay there until the tax payer has to pay to get it removed.
  6. https://www.steam-packet.com/vehicles "Vans cannot be booked online. Please contact our Reservations Team on 661661 (IOM), 08722 992 992* (UK) or 0044 8722 992 992* (ROI & Outside UK)." From the horses mouth.
  7. We do for vehicles that are imported over a certain age and ones that have ben out of tax for a select number of years. Also, vehicles can be sent to the test centre for inspection by the Police, and are examined after accidents collisions where deemed required. There is also regular testing for commercial vehicles, mini busses, taxi cabs and the like. So, yes, we do have MoT style testing on the island. It just has a few differences.
  8. Oh, you did! https://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/road-works-on-new-castletown-road-669275
  9. The tread might be good, but cracks in the wall and uneven tyre walls will. As would incorrect load and speed ratings. I once had an friendly advisory chat in the MoT station with tyres that were fully legal in tread and walls, but the date stamp put them at 15 years old. The car was kept in the garage and did about 2.5K miles a year. It ain't just about the brand name and tread depth. Over here some tyres are worn out due to sun and wall damage long before the tread markers start to show.
  10. But the wrong type of Goodyear tyre to fitted to a car can be worse than a budget brand. Each type made by a specific manufacturer will have different compounds to make them hard or soft, tread cuts for wet or dry, snow or mud etc. All season to winter or summer tyres. EOM fit is down to cost v handling v performance. Simple tyre swaps can increase range, grip, reduce noise, lifetime and much more - simple tyre swaps for the same brand but cheaper price can lead to more noise, poorer handling, and poor mpg. .
  11. You must be tired - take a break. DVT must be a risk if you have been driving that long. I can only manage about 4 hours before I need to have a stretch.
  12. Car dashboards never used to light up unless the headlights were on - most do now which also does not help. The handbook tells you if the lights are on or not by telling you about a handy little icon on the dash display. This just being aware of surroundings. If it's foggy you should think 'might need my fogs on - they don't come on unless I have the lights on - switch lights on and be prepared. I could also use my wipers now and then as the screen will be wet and misty'. The best one is - 'it's foggy, I have a silver car, I have sidelights on - what's the problem?' If it's raining you should be thinking, - 'might want my lights on, the rear ones don't come on with the DRLs - switch lights on' Same goes for 'it's a straight bit of road with no bends or corners for miles - must park my Fiesta/Clio/Pug/Nissan Jizz on its roof'. ..and 'it's an unlimited road, but it's full of ice and snow, let's post of Faceache about the drivers doing 40 and holding me up'.
  13. Did you try to tell them it goes past your house? That seems to work.
  14. Stop them at the bungalow. If a bulb is out bus them into Onchan to find a new bulb. They then have to make their own way back, fit it and get the all clear from a copper before it can be moved again. Not done by the end of the day - £250 storage fee for leaving an un-roadworthy vehicle on the road. Rising by £250 every night until the fee is £1000. Then recovered and sold on or scrapped.
  15. I had a tortoise in the garden. It was old when I last saw it. Not seen it for 20 something years now. My toothbrush is blue (the colour, not it's state of mind, although, to be honest, I've not asked it if it has any problems).
  16. I did the figures once. It would mean the test centre would have to do something like 25 vehicles a day, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to get them and the regular inspections done. The alternative is of course to sub it out to local garages. Which would need to invest in the kit, training, updates, inspections and just like the UK, be open to, shall we say, ‘mates rates’. Local garages won’t be wanting to spend the umpteen thousands just to put a DoT badge on the outside.
  17. There is a barrel and IOM GOV is scrapping the bottom of ever single one they get their hands on now, MoT tests are pointless. A regular test will not stop the sort of people who drive cars in some of the states they are in. Just like speed limits - some people will ignore them. The test cert. is only valid for the period of time a vehicle is on the ramp a the test centre. It can fail as soon as it backs off the ramp. A year test (or a test set out for any other period of time) will only make some people think their car is safe for the road until the next test. Disc are now obsolete. The government could save few quid by scrapping them. The world and his/her/it's Mum/Dad/Guardian can check online to see if any vehicle is taxed. Insurance can also be checked for most vehicles too (fleet coverage not so much). A few quid saved by all. I commend this budget measure to the forum.
  18. They ship 'em over in the mornings for work and then ship 'em back at the end of their shift?
  19. Well, despite it being closed for refurbishment and open in the Spring, they have only just round to finding someone to tell them it's beyond repair and needs knocking down. https://www.gov.im/media/1382419/refurbishment-of-niarbyl-café-dalby-closing-080324.pdf?fbclid=IwAR2Z1ndzxyQe7IX7JcKiqk4tj89zAWfcmF2Ky9Xivnd049ewKP28Lijh0-U
  20. no,no, no - just no. It has been subject roadworks and surface dressing on a number of occasions recently. The last being Brown Cow Hill. Since then its been dug up in places and squares of tarmac laid down where there was once chippings. The rest of it has worn out quickly because is was done shite.
  21. Feckless idiots circling a feckless idiot.
  22. Alf could get his figures up to his dreamy levels - if only for a year.
  23. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-68433675
  24. In the UK, it isn't illegal to film someone in a public place without their consent unless the video is recorded for nefarious purposes. There is no expectation of privacy in a park or the street, for example. Taken from an internet - I think it's just the IOM Gov desperate for cash. Along with this More rom an internet I'd claim confusing advice and tell the IC to bugger off my land.
  25. I'd need a wide angle lens to get my MHK in shot at the door.
