I have been to a hotel in Surrey which happily lives in the middle of a roundabout, to get to it you just take the innermost lane and turn into the car park, looks like that could be done with the QB even if the car park was outside the roundabout and an underpass into the middle

Isn't that just wishful thinking - what evidence is there for that? Car use is going up not down and even more vehicles are being registered each year. There were 73496 registered on the island last year.

Fuel consumption down 20% in 2008:

Car sales down 8% in 2008:

UK DOT figures show 1st qtr 2008 traffic dropped 2% on average, and that's without the higher rises we've seen in the 2nd qtr of the year. See the price is climbing nearer $150 today...

And it's this sort of sentiment that drives the price. If enough people believe the price will go up, it'll go up. It's close to a dead cert for commidity traders. 50% annual inflation of your investment? Yes please!

Greenpeace should invest in oil, the rising prices have done far more for reducing consumption than anything they've ever done.

That's not the Isle of Man though - is it?

Looking at the plans they look fairly sensible - the lanes should be easy to negotiate as long as you get in the right one to start off with.

One thing I don't understand - Manx radio had this quote...

The Department of Transport wants to create a conventional large roundabout - in a scheme which will mean the demolition of the Quarterbridge pub, a new road bridge over the river and the realignment of approach roads.

Is the pub getting demolished? It appears on the plans.

I think it actually looks OK - I was pleasantly surprised.

Because it looks Ok does not mean that it is necessary. Drivers still have to get out into the traffic flow - something a few of them don't seem to have the skill to do.

Have the DoT produced a cost benefit/analysis or is this just a 'nice to do'. Should £4 million of your money and mine (about £200 per family) be spent on this without having some form of commercially sound justification?

PS: How does a pedestrian cross the road - there does not seem to be any provision in the crayon sketh.

BEEN AND GONE

By Nick Serpell

BBC Obituary Unit

Round and round

Our regular column covering the passing of significant - but lesser-reported - people of the past month.

Thousands of British motorists found themselves going round in circles after Frank Blackmore invented the mini roundabout. A professional traffic engineer, he became frustrated with hold ups at conventional junctions, and campaigned for a system of priority from the right. When this failed to be accepted, he came up with the idea of a small roundabout with no centre. The first was installed in Peterborough 1969 with Blackmore, in attendance, shouting instructions at motorists through a loud hailer.

I think it looks ok except for the access road to the car park. That'll cause problems for people approaching from the South and trying to cross over.

It'll be a brave cyclist that tries to negotiate it... It should ease congestion though as old biddies will avoid it like the plague. And it'll confuse the hell out of most motorists who up to now think the quarterbridge roundabouts are targets and should be apprached at high speed while aiming for the middle.

I *think* that it is shown to help people imagine how the roundabout will look, where it will be placed etc - AFAIK the QB is being demolished, but you never can tell.

it does look ok, it adds a few hundred yards to your journey if you're coming from bradden bridge and want to head south though. an oval that big could double as cycling race track, sort of a velodrome without the banked curves. the sefton group are rumoured to have plans for a 6 storey hotel in the middle.
