Cambon Posted February 24, 2010 Share Posted February 24, 2010 JBL's? Tannoy Dual Concentrics FTW - and they're British... I've got 2 pairs, both over 30 years old I guess. Driven by an old Quad system of the same vintage until recently (retired in favour of a surround amp from MF Classifieds). It is good to see Quad still producing top end stuff too. They have recently released a valve integrated amp (Quad II integrated) using Tung-Sol valves. I am yet to hear one but it must sound beautiful. Mind you for £4500........ I was never a massive fan on Tannoy dual concentrics (except for the Westminsters - if the room was big enough!). But requiring a big room was always the problem. I had a set of Little Red Monitors in the mid '80s but sold them. I still have my late '70s JBL L-100As though, and they still sound fantastic today. If magazines and advertising were to be believed the old Tannoys and JBLs should sound like very bad transistor radios. Quite the opposite is true, they sound fantastic. Depending on what prices you are looking to pay, this will likely even make a specific trip economic. You'll generally get your pants pulled down big style here IME. Fossils have a lot of good hi-fi equipment Especially analogue stuff. ETA: Plus all the best music...since you young whippersnappers bolloxed music up after 1989, and usually only need to hear 3 notes these days. . Shake me up Judy Posted September 7, 2018 Share Posted September 7, 2018 Manx Audio opposite Rick Wakeman's old place. Bought all my Hi-fi there and still use most of it forty years later. Much of it is English stuff from the days when we used to make the best audio equipment in the world. Mike Myers and his wife used to run Manx Audio but they have long since passed away. I got to know them a little bit and they were lovely people. He was an ex fighter pilot in the RAF. They were quite friendly with the Wakeman's before Nina went awol. So I emailed various Quad specialists around the world, to no avail. Emailed Quad HQ last month and got this response: Dear Sir Thank you for your E-mail Sorry no longer available. Might be worth trying http://www.quadrevisie.eu/quadrevisie.html I nearly left school at 16 to work for Quad, Peter Walker took me around the factory then, some of their production techniques and philosophies were "interesting" - but they worked. Always had a soft spot for older Quad gear. My own aged system is largely Arcam Delta and Tannoy, still sounds great but I have to get the soldering iron out occasionally because it's over 30. The only component to fail in all that time was the bridge rectifier in the 405. Remarkably I had a spare one for a Velocette LE which looked the same so it was substituted about 15 years ago and it's still working. I imagine all the old electrolytic capacitors are approaching the end of their working life though as are the potentiometers I wish I still had my electrostatics but Head of Domestic Control didn't appreciate their unique aesthetics. Quad still make innovative stuff but they are not the company they used to be (what is?) My dad had a Quad 22/ 2xII in the 60s and I used to get sent to Huntingdon regularly on the train with bits to repair. I shudder to think that these eventually got thrown away considering how much they now attain on ebay. Someone said you can even buy KT66 valves again but not the GEC ones I imagine. Back in the 60s and early 70s, they used to let you into the workshop whilst they did the repairs which would not happen these days in case you got burned with a soldering iron and sued. Finally, I have a Quad FM2 that is surplus. It matches the 33 but has valves. They rarely appear on ebay but does anyone know if they are worth more or less than the common FM3?
