Steam Packet Warns Of Disruption To Sailings

Early in the season Manxman was run at a slower speed (eg when it shared the route with the Ben) - but once it took over the whole operation it soon it became obvious that the old timetable was impossible and they increased the speed - it becomes quite noticeable and I suspect the bridge are running just within the resonance region to gain a little extra time but dare not push it any further - the vibration is totally dominant when turning in harbour - the whole boat can shake.

weather forecast
Wind: Southwest 5 or 6, increasing 6 or 7 later this evening, then occasionally gale 8 later
tonight and at first tomorrow morning.
State of Sea: Moderate or rough, becoming mainly rough for a time.

any mention of force 7 or above seems to be signal that the boat won't run - its obviously not designed for the Irish sea

I suspect Tesco will soon be thankful that they also acquired the Shoprite warehouse as under this wind restriction there could be several consecutive days when it darenot run. Edited by Frances

I'd suspect that it can cope with the Irish Sea; it can't cope with the port entry space constraints at either end in those conditions.

She went out in about a force 6 this morning. It took 4 hours 35. The return journey took over 4 hours.

Needless to say, tonight's sailing has been cancelled.

Time to send Arrow out again?

it's starting to resemble the 18th C sailing ship days when there was no mail for 2weeks because of contrary winds - the advent of steam ships removed this but the significantly increased sailing time for the Manxman indicates a major problem with the windage against a wind not just harbour problems.

Time to get the Ben operational - there will be many holiday getaways wrecked this week if its a force 6 problem.

The Ben is in dry dock in Birkenhead along with Manannan.

If you've worked for the racket for years and all of a sudden they decide you need to live on board for a significant amount of time then I'd say you have a right to be pissed off.

Absolutely they’ve every right to feel upset by the proposed changes.

But does the steam packet exist to transport people, or to keep people in jobs?

It could still transport goods and people while treating its staff with respect.

Especially now it's in public ownership. There's a lot of extremely poor employers in the private sector. Government should be setting a good example.
