ScotsAlan Posted March 13, 2014 Share Posted March 13, 2014 I have seen a similar effect at Scarlet one day while I was fishing. There was a clear blue sky, and within an hour or so about a half dozen airliners passed overhead on the same general heading. I could see the contrails spread out and join up till there was a massive cloud in the sky. It was fascinating to see. I remember thinking at the time of how this was an example of pollution in action. But then I considered it more, and come to the conclusion it was probably more likely to be caused by the water content of the air being high. Jet engines compressing the air causing the water vapour to come out of solution, followed by the water droplets in the wake of the plane acting as nuclei causing further condensation. Contrails are mostly water vapour after all. I also remember the fish were not biting that day :-( Aircraft zig zagging over the sky?
