A bill has passed through the House of Keys which would essentially make it easier for an employer to give a job to a non-Island worker. However the Control of Employment Bill does not do away with work permits altogether. Economic Development Minister John Shimmin says the existing legislation dates back to 1975, and the Island is a very different place 40 years on. He says this new bill should strike the right balance: ---------------------------------------------------------- Strike the right balance for whom? Certainly not the locals who are already over run with flotsam and jetsam and are struggling with uncertainty and financial survival, in a world where everything you need is going up and everything you own is losing value this unilateral and vacuous decision is a further kick in the teeth. This government is obsessed in giving moneyed interests a free ride to import whoever they want without hindrance, which appears to work very well under the current system IMHO without loosening policy further with a work permit system that is not currently fit for purpose in any event and hangs locals out to dry. Is their not one mhk, who represents the interests of the locals who elected them in good faith, who will do something for the local electorate rather than themselves and vested interests? Time after time i see some puff piece in the nonsense which is iom today which purports and masquerades as a news information service, proclaiming and trumpeting some import taking up a new position at abc, xyz or 123 who is not Manx and has probably only farted unknowingly in our direction before seeing an opportunity. It is and has been too easy for this to happen for too long. Queue even more vultures, carpetbaggers and chancers looking from outside for an opportunity to sell more snake oil and get rich quick schemes to our frozen head in the light leaders, involving vast taxpayer expenditure because its whats best for us. The pe teacher and his puppet masters need a lesson in democracy and accountability. The work permit system in an environment of increasing austerity for the tax paying indigenous population should be tightened not loosened to protect the locals. These idiots quite apart from wrecking the economy are set to destroy further the prospects, income and future of not only the working age locals but the Manx schoolchildren who believe in and deserve a proper, not second class future in the land of their birth. These clowns have finally completed the selling out of the electorate they are meant to represent in a topsy turvey land where vested interests mean more than people. Rant over. Sure it protects some vulnerable people but just gives a hiding place to so many more. You can (often) bring in labour from the UK or Ireland cheaper and get a full days work as a bonus. Yes, well, we see it all the time. Private businesses putting up adverts here on the island, all the while never intending to employ anyone local, already having someone in mind from their UK office. As for protecting jobsworths, that's simply not true. The civil service is rife with jobsworths and most of them are from the UK. And before "Infrequent Observer" comes along, I am citing myself as the source of that claim. I've worked in enough departments in my time. Fact is that not all jobs in the island can be filled by people already there. You want a booming economy, you'll have to import some talent now and again.
