Once could argue that this is merely highlighting an event that they are sponsoring/hosting....not advertising the company per se.

 

If you wanted to go down that road then surely any local event which had a headline sponsor would be prevented from being talked about.

If it is highlighting an event then it should be on the events board. In any case, "highlighting" is the same thing as "promoting", and this is clearly promoting their business.

I expect the intention of the company with this thread was to generate debate and draw attention to their commercial events. It's advertising, plain and simple.

PokerStars doesn't make a profit from either event: we sponsor these events for several reasons:

 

-it makes a good contribution to the Isle of Man (eg, other businesses profit from the visitors)

-it allows us to showcase our corporate hometown to our customers (many of whom don't know much about the Isle of Man)

-it allows us to teach IOM residents about what we actually do (ie, PokerStars is not like the casino gambling that they might incorrectly think that we do)

-it allows us to engage our staff in our activities

 

Either way, you make the good point that this thread might be more suitable in the Events forum, so I've asked the moderators to move it there. Sorry for adding it in the wrong forum.

That's not the point. Should we make exceptions to the T&Cs for very large businesses? Gambling in particular is something that doesn't need promoting. Poker is not a sport. A sport is a formalised physical challenge or contest. Poker is a game where money stakes are gambled. Poker is gambling. Pokerstars presumably make their money from rakes, and from advertising. Gambling can be very problematic for individuals and society when it becomes an addiction. I appreciate that many people who enjoy playing poker are not addicts, and I support their rights to engage in it. Nonetheless, for many people, gambling on poker and other games is a big problem and gaming companies are exploiting their addiction for profit. Advertising and promoting these games is morally questionable.

 

It's a very different thing from saying, 'there will be a free tennis tournament this weekend'.

 

A better comparison would be, 'there will be a cocaine snorting competition this weekend at the Villa'

Most tennis tournaments have a membership / entry fee same as the tt races and need a lot of skill as does poker, and I think advertising cocaine snorting at the villa is neither a game or sport and would be totally illegal

Yes, but tennis and other sports don't have the same addictive capabilities as gambling. Look into gambling and why it is addictive. People are seldom addicted to sport, and then not in the same way as people can be to gambling or drugs. People who enter a tennis tournament are not addicts being exploited for profit as many players of online poker are.

That's one definition, another is a pastime indulged for pleasure. Seems silly to argue the point, it means different things to different people.

Nope. Big chunk of online poker is free, including what happens on pokerstars. It's a game, it doesn't have to be played for cash. You can bet on football, does that make football gambling?

Lots of things are addictive and damaging in excess, from booze and fags to running or eating doughnuts. Yes these activities should be closely watched and guidence given if they become damaging, but you are not my moral guardian and I don't need your standards to decide what I can handle in terms of promotion.
