EORH
Remember there will be a clear out come the next election with retirements and big pension pay outs on the cards, we will be left with problems for the likes of the ones left who will stand again, [assuming they will get in again] and any new ones to take the place of the retirees. What will the kitty look like will be the big question, and will the new Government have the guts to raise income tax instead of scraping the bottom of the barrel with petty taxes like the toilet one. Donald Trumps
This is so true - they're all going to fuck off into retirement, leaving a dreadful mess behind them, & Chris Thomas will have to clean it up!

GD4ELI
DT: The only one who could possibly do the job is Kate B., and what chance do you think she would have on the misogynistic Island? I had high hopes for Alf Cannan, sadly he's becoming a junior version of his father . You're doomed.

Why cant people see that the government cant raise income tax as an alternative to the petty taxes they have been introducing? They do that and we see an exodus plus it hits the shops and businesses on the island. They are very limited as to what they can do without wrecking the economy and despite the drivel on here it is actually doing okay in this time. With the UK coming out of recession we should see the benefit in a few years as normal. Until then we will be paying 3-400 quid a year to pay for the poo tax, that is all they can really do. CBman
Most MHK's try to do what is best for the Island not what is best for their own pockets. The biggest problem is they are powerless as all the power is with the civil servants who have far too much power and no mandate from the public on how to use it. I have first hand experence of this mentality where two ministers wanted to assist us to do something really good that would have clearly demonstrated private/public partnerships working well together for the benefit of the whole island only to be told by some dick head civil servant to jog on and the minister wasn't the boss of that particular department despite being the minister for it. We would be better under Mugabe, at least his civil servants know who the boss is.
Guest
Whilst I accept that they like to spend money on grandiose schemes,I just wish they would not buy the MOST EXPENSIVE product all the time. What is wrong with choosing a more economical model which will still fulfill the need? I am of the opinion that there is a mind-set within the public service that believes only the best will do. However, now that we can't afford it shouldn't our design/purchasing policies change?

I think if they raised income tax and lowered VAT at the same time, they could raise revenue and stimulate the local economy. (yes, I know, we're not allowed to vary the rate of VAT because of the agreement with the UK, but we can dream....!)

Boris, it does not automatically follow that the UK recovering from recession will mean that the Isle of Man's economy will flourish again. The island has enjoyed a long spell of being in receipt of overly generous VAT share revenues, and as such has existed for many years on a false economy which never needed to be properly accounted for and which it can no longer afford to sustain. Unless the next administration can develop new and sustainable methods of generating a business and resources based economy the island is going to be in very dire straits in the in the near future. For any Govt to succeed in office it has to carry the approval of the electorate with it. The unpopular and inequitable attempts to fill the revenue void and preserve the status quo by introducing stealth charges will only serve to further alienate Govt from the voters, who have already shown that they despise deceitful and unfair policies, and will not be a successful measure for any means intended. Donald Trumps
My impression is that things are getting worse here, even as the UK economy 'improves' Possibly, the only justification for Minister Shimmin to be given £2m to spend on 6 temps for his department
