I went to see Elton John at Nobles Park. Was a good craic. The yessirs gossiped throughout the whole thing and only paid attention when he sang the famous numbers. Me included.

Richard Digence and Pam Ayres caused a bit of a stir and fighting to break out at the pensioners concert at the Old Mill Tearooms in Port St Mary once. But people are discouraged from mentioning it.

Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones played the Palace in 1964 and 1965. The 4th picture here shows them having tea in the Villa Gardens. Or maybe coffee. Or something.

 

Here they are playing roulette at the casino. The picture is captioned: September 8, 1965; Mick, Keith and Charlie try their luck on a roulette table in Douglas on the Isle of Man".

 

They went out to Radio Caroline at least once too.

Robert Plant. That was awesome.

'Sweet', Palace Lido, mid-seventies. Whatever anyone thinks, live, they had a great edge to them. Mick Tucker (The Fucker) played, 'The Man with the Golden Arm' drum-solo with two video-screens projecting himself playing in tandem with his live kit. Epic! Awesome valve volume. Went on for around 20 minutes. Had me rooted to the spot. Coincidently, lead singer of 'Sweet', Brian Connelly managed the band I was in, in the late eighties, by which time he'd succumbed to alcohol and the dreaded heroin addictions and died a couple of years later.

 

Slade, too, played many times. In fact the first major band I saw live ('72/'73?). My young ears didn't stop ringing for a couple of days.

 

Rory Gallagher, at the Villa. Level42 also. Had the pleasure of playing support to them.

 

Curved Air played the Lido in '75, with Stewart Copeland (Police) playing drums. He arrived late and my mate Nigel Quayle (RIP) had to soundcheck the kit in the afternoon. We were given free tickets to the evening show which featured lead singer, Sonia Christina in a crocheted mini-dress and thigh-boots, fully naked underneath! Of course, we hogged the front of the stage in teenage delight.

Curved Air? Saw them a few years ago supporting Caravan, they weren't very good.

T-Rex played The Lido in the 70's. MeatLoaf and Status Quo played The Bowl in the 80's. Apparently Boyzone played in The Cave disco! I remember 2Unlimited and technotronic, but not Boyzone. More recently Alice Cooper, Ray Davies, Squeeze, Brian Wilson, Joan Armatrading, Dionne Warwick, Cast, Fun Lovin' Criminals, Van Morrison, Belinda Carlisle, The Christians, China Crisis, The Saturdays, Elton John, Travis, Kaiser Chiefs, Deacon Blue, Ronan Keating, McFly, Robin Gibb, Imelda May, Blondie, Ash, Happy Mondays, Turin Brakes, Newton Faulkner, The Beautiful South. Loads more that I'll think of in a minute

Great post Quilp. Didn't know the great Rory Gallagher played the Villa. What year would that have been ? Early 70's ? Just before he took ill he was booked to play Summerland, but he had to pull out. He died a few months later. His music always meant a lot to me, and still does.

Actually, RG appeared in late '94, early '95, along with Mungo Gerry and some others of that era. Hot Chocolate also, IIRC. He died in june '95. Exceptional feel on the guitar.

Curious to know more about the RG gig.I recall there being a bit of a stir that tickets were sold for the show but were bogus or something.(Streeetlight Promotions in London-yellow ticket,am sure there was something like,sure he was ill but was never actually "booked" to play) Indeed he did take ill and I had a ticket for the Fleadh at Finsbury park I guess in '94 where he pulled out due illness and was lost the following year.That said Shane MacGowan also was too ill to perform one year but back then it was hard to know when he was fit enough even!

Dr Feelgood at the Lido 76/77 is etched in my memory. Never have I witnessed a band with such energy and menace. They looked more like four blokes who had just pulled off a messy bank job than a band. All scruffy suits and bad hair cuts.

But the sound! Fast, hard driving blues that had the place bouncing. Sadly Lee Brilleaux (singer) died some years ago and Wilco Johnson (guitar) has terminal cancer but is still touring & recording with Roger Daltry. Worth a listen if blues is your bag.

The Feelgood's returned in the early 90's if I recall, while Lee Brilleaux was still fronting them. Wilko had long left by then of course. I'm not sure about that Gallagher visit. My recollection is that although tickets were sold, the concert was cancelled because of his illness.
