mannin1, you took the words out of my mouth!......the govt. are feathering their own nests and crapping on the rest of us......what's next, close all surgeries and have them in chemists?....oh...they've already suggested that.

its privatisation, and its needed to save £750 000 which the manx post office is losing on its overstaffed underworked gold plated pension employees'i know there will be the usual bitching and whinging on here from the socialist nutters, but socialism ALWAYS runs out of other peoples money, and finally our government are being forced to accept this nasty fact of life.

It's running at £750,000 loss. With 19 redundancies at say £20,000 each, that's a saving of £375k, with the rest made up by moving out of the huge buildings that they are currently situated in.

This will be spun as a convenience for the rabble, they'll now be able to get their dole - walk 3 steps, and get their fags too.

I've only just heard this news this morning so I need time to fully digest it rather than giving a knee jerk reaction. I'm not best pleased right now though to say the least!

The Spar is a fucking nightmare to shop in most of the time and this is only going to make the experience worse in my opinion.

I'm sure there must be something that can be done to prevent this but I don't know what yet. I'll have to try and find out some more information and see what's what.

We're asking people what they think about it in the shop this morning and aside from 1 customer, the response has been entirely negative towards this decision.

Every time there is a money saving scheme put forward those on here start whinging.

It has been repeated time and again - money is short services are going to be cut/reduced/reconfigured.

There are some things that are an essential public service. Not many, but some.

While it may be do big deal to travel ten miles plus from a village to a Main Post Office in England to travel even a couple of miles and then (try to) find a parking place on the island is a different matter.

Regent St. is well placed for people who want the services and facilities of a Main PO. It is close to where they do a lot of their shopping and is convenient for people who travel into town by car, and most importantly by bus.

AT - how right you are. This whole problem was known about, reports were drafted suggesting how we can do things better .......

All ignored.

My personal view is that every politician and every senior civil servant who can have responsibility attached to them should have their current salaries cut by about 30% and their cs pensions cut by 50%.

If not maybe we should test our lamp posts to see how strong they are.

Regent street is not closing, it is becoming a sub post office. It is probably quite a good business for someone to take on.

It raises the question -- why can't the government run it properly on behalf of the taxpayer without incurring a loss? Why do they have to give it to someone in the private sector, who will be in it to make a profit, in order for it to magically become a good business venture? I don't understand it at all.

Couple of clues. They won't have as many staff. They won't be on public sector pay and conditions.

I was surprised by the statement that Post Office has to provide Treasury with £2M profit per year, so it's not just there providing a service then, and how can they quantify the outcome of closing Regent St & Ramsey ?, people may just go elsewhere than Spar who maybe have assumed they will pick up all of the traffic that used to go to PO

I wouldn't be surprised if this decision is being 'engineered' in time for the run up to the next election. So that despite the rest of the carnage of cuts and stealth tax rises, MHKS will 'come out fighting' of course. Granny farming and granny herding at its best...this issue becomes the major focus at the election and the dimwits get restored at the next election...Whilst the half wits that allow them back feel they've actually achieved something.

Cynical? Moi?
