The Sick Moon
Details published in Tynwald question The government has revealed it spends around a million pounds a year on flights, hotels, food and hire cars. The figures have emerged in a written answer to a question in Tynwald this week from Onchan MHK Zac Hall. He asked Chief Minister Allan Bell to break down the spending by each department or board over the past five years. Top of the list is the Department of Health and Social Care, which spends around £130,000 a year on flights alone. The data reveals the three big spenders for off-Island travel are the Departments of Health and Social Care, Education and Children and Economic Development. In the figures for the first time last year was the Cabinet Office, which spent almost £32,000 on hotel rooms and £110,000 on flights over twelve months. By contrast, the Office of Fair Trading is the lowest spender: laying out a total of just £2,500 since 2010. By contrast, even the general registry spent roughly four times that amount. The Sick Moon
Interesting to see the OFT spending so little. A reflection of how much they actually do?
Declan
Well if anyone can get a good deal you'd imagine the OFT could.
trmpton
These figures are absolutely meaningless without more detail and context. One department spent more than another, but we don't know who travelled, why, what type of car they hired etc. Pointless meaningless information. Tugger
The OFT's remit is almost wholly domestic, isn't it? Why would they be travelling anywhere? The English butchers and publicans have their own OFT to check on their sausages and pint measures. I guess the DSC flights are for patients getting treatment in England. Pretty chunky that. Where's all the money going on hotels?

Albert Tatlock
I've heard of OFFGAS, OFWAT etc. Maybe our OFT should set up a similar group OFF-JOLLYING.
mojomonkey
Unless it is calculated as a figure per head of staff it is meaningless. The department of health employs thousands of people, I'd be surprised if the office of fair trading employs more than fifty.
Roger Smelly
Well I bet they were not staying in a Travelodge. Business class all the way old chums and don't spare the champers what what I hope they are not putting the escorts on the bill like they did in Cannes
Moghrey Mie
Interesting to see the OFT spending so little. A reflection of how much they actually do? I was reading WHICH earlier today. They've done research into 'special offers' and 'multi-buy deals'. I was wondering whether the OFT keeps an eye on things like that in our local super-markets.
