John Wright
Top of Vicarage Road, and not on optical, I get anywhere between 20 and 33 down and between 2 and 3 up. In rural Bulgaria, well ski resort, new optical cable connection and I get 40 to 45 down and 30 to 35 up. In Spain at my hut in the hills, I've only got dial up terrestrial but I have a radio link to a community booster which has a microwave link to the nearest council office and from there to the nearest exchange on an optical circuit and consistently get 10 down and 3 up
trmpton
Echo the point made about master sockets, no one else on the router, and a wired connection. To test your "broadband" speed you must do the above, any other test is influenced by so many factors your ISP has no control over its completely pointless. Eg in the last 10 minutes. Laptop A wired to router - just over 50 download Laptop A wireless right next to router - 33 download iPad wirelessly router - 36 download iPad wireless bedroom - 7 download So I could either whine about the slow download of 7, or I could accept that I am actually getting over 50 and look into ways to improve the performance of my devices such as access points, newer devices, moving the router, checking channels in use by neighbours etc etc. Unfortunately most people just run a speed latest at random, see a figure less than their ISP advertised and then complain that the ISP are shit - when they aren't
trmpton
Also just tested the phone. Exact same location, different ways of holding in hands and with and with protective case on. Easy to replicate Consistent result showing a difference of 15mbps between one hand and no case and two hands and a case.

Terminal
My broadband isn't the fastest on here. It's only 14.5 Mbit/s but it allows me to download 14.5 million bits of data, every second, over a 30 year old, 2000 meter long pair of copper cables which was only ever designed to allow a basic analogue telephone call. Not bad when you think about it.

Since moving house at the end of last year we get 8-10 download (now with Sure). In a previous house we were getting 1.5 download on a good day (with MT). I appreciate that it may have been beyond their control but they were anything but helpful when I regularly phoned them to complain, claiming it was nothing to do with them (although how a telephone operator sitting in Douglas can say that with any certainty is beyond me) & that if they were to come out it would cost £115 & could be anytime within the next week. Thing is I'd have paid them £50 to come out & waited till they could fit it in, even paid them extra if they were there a while - but £115 for a call out from someone you are already paying £25 a month + line rental for the broadband is taking the piss. Sure's unlimited broadband is also £10 a month cheaper. Incidentally I have an acquaintance who had similarly shit broadband & when he contacted them got the same spiel - he agreed & when they came out , low & behold it was a fault on the line. wrighty
I just got 8 down and 0.6 up, which seems pretty crap in comparison with everyone here, but it seems fast enough in real life, and there were 4 (or maybe even 5 if the little one hasn't switched off yet!) of us using it simultaneously by Wi-Fi! Monkey boy
http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12439/~/engineer-chargesAh, I notice you didn't feel the need to also post a link to BT's broadband costs, I wonder why?The thing is, I am a reasonable man, I understand that the problem may not be down to MT, and I realise that if I call them out & this is the case then I will have to pay to cover their costs & a bit of profit on top, I'm fine with all that. What I don't accept is that a company who's making a profit from me on a monthly basis seeing the fact that I am having problems with the service they are providing as an opportunity to ass rape me for every penny they can get from me. You seem to think it's acceptable because BT does the same ( while failing to mention the monthly cost for the same service from them would be less than half of MT's). But here's the thing nobody else charges that much for a call out. Some that I have paid in the last few years; Washing machine repair.....£40 ish Boiler repair..............£ 60 ish Locksmith................. £ 55ish Car recovery...............£ 40 Sky Tv repair............. £ 65 Most of these make no monthly profit out of me whatsoever and yet still manage to send a skilled individual with vehicle & specialist equipment round & presumably make a profit for around half of what MT (who are already making a monthly profit out of me) want. They are greedy bastards it's as simple as that.

Not only did I get an invoice for each of them, not a single one of them charged me for sending me an invoice, unlike those thieving bastards at MT who do.
