Sorry if this  in the wrong thread, it relates to egaming. It involves a local resident and a Police investigation. Was published in the Observer today -

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2019/oct/20/former-666bet-director-reportedly-settles-67m-claims-with-liquidators

Wasn't this the never resolved 'Hill Street' raid that took down Regency Travel and was linked to lots of weird goings on around the burglary crime wave.

It happened a few years ago, and whilst there is a lot of articles online, this article is the first for a long time, and in the Guardian of all newspapers. It won’t reflect well on the island.

Why? Does this type of thing not happen anywhere else?

It happens everywhere. But to the Guardian, the person involved is a Manx Resident, so to them the island becomes a tax haven tax avoidance or evasion scheme, so is regarded as a legitimate target, rightly or wrongly.

Most people won't even read the article, let alone take note of whether he is a resident or whether this takes place on the Isle of Man or the Isle of Wight.

The Guardianistas know everything there is to know about everything. :whistling:

Yes and they are good at shit stirring and winding up Jeremy Corbyn et al, and we on Fantasy Island aren’t immune from the Guardianistas, remember the Panarama programme with HRH The Chief Minister, and the shady side of Athol Street. Also there are a few very left wing individuals involved in ‘charity’ work and on Manx Pressure groups, who add their voice. Remember it’s generally Manx Forum Members, most Manx Residents who are not the problem, but will be punished by the actions of a minority. Also, like I have mentioned in other threads, the actions of some HNWIs have hardly brought a glowing light to the island - VAT investigations, tribunals, Brexit, Bitcoin concerns etc.

They're certainly better informed than most.

Plus, unlike many so-called "newspapers" about these days, the Grauniad is not in thrall to the agenda of the owner.

Of course, you would have to read it to realise what a difference that makes....

I've been living here in sleepy North Norfolk for 20 years now and soon after we bought our place at first whenever the subject of the IOM cropped up as in "Were ya from then bhoy?" (that sort of thing happens whenever fresh meat appears in any pub) the usual response involved tourism and of course motor cycle racing.

Recently a new couple of people who had been living on the island moved in, he had been a hospital consultant and when he mentioned having moved from the island ALL comments were about tax dodging and dirty money.

What would you expect when the likes of  the Guardian and BBC continue to lie like they do?

Those people will be ignorant to the facts.

Your post is evidence of that.  If anything 20 plus years ago there might be a more valid case to have a view of the IOM as a tax haven rather than a tourist destination.

IF what you say is actually true then the current perception of the uninformed can only come from the media.

So the rest like the Scum, Torygraph, Excess and Daily Wail are all paragons of virtue then?

You're having a laugh!

As I posted previously you get "TT" and "Seedy little tax haven" and that is it.

Unfortunately it's an impossible position to try and defend....

Please stop calling it the Grauniad.  I first heard it referred as such nearly 40 years ago, and even then it was an old story to be "in on".

It isn't really.

They publish lies. As proven again recently.

They should focus on their own doorstep. The UK is amongst the biggest tax dodging nations on earth.
