I notice we have fewer and fewer Manx deemsters. Are there any Manx left? Is Corlett still there? I don't keep up.

If it is so, it might be for the good. Perhaps less chance of being "influenced" by local connections etc, etc, etc. leading to a more independent dispensation of justice.

I wonder if a "Manx" deemster would have delivered the same scathing verdict?

No, I can't agree with that. A person need only have a job here for influence to exist.

Being some toff from the UK is not going to make you any less influenced by "connections" than a Manx person.

Depends on how pally they were with the advoocates or their firms. A deemster is basically an Athol Street advocate in a wig and tights.

The is the Isle of Man with Isle of Man justice.

Different deemster = different verdict.

Difficult to understand why it is that having a fully open register for law and tax enforcement officers, which we have, should be any less effective than a register which any tom dick and harry can take a peep at to satisfy their curiosity and jealously ! The island is already dripping in measures to restrict dodgy dealings, ask any professional how difficult it has become to operate here !!

The downside of a register of this nature is it will force legitimate business away from here where every obstacle is placed in its way, and it will go to Delaware the Caymans etc etc , who operate in a far less scrutinised manner than here !

Of course, this sudden flurry of activity absolutely doesn't make it look like the Crown Dependencies rely heavily on being secrecy jurisdictions for tax purposes.

Not at all.

No really.

Definitely not.....

Without doubt they were in the past, however we would be far from your first port of call now if you had buckets of dodgy dealings to off load !

Then why is the CM running around like a wet hen waiting to be caught?

Who gives a toss about this beneficial ownership thing? All the information can be found in the public domain already.

Because he hasn't a clue !!! If you saw him answer the Panorama stuff ye gods ! This simply needs a presentation of the facts as they apply today, people can infer whatever they like and I agree running around like a headless chicken makes us look dodgy when the truth is now some way removed from that !! The fact of the matter is the dodgy jurisdictions will be rejoicing as wrongly handled the legitimate business will go elsewhere !

He isn't. You made that up.

Is that made up as in a ridiculous assertion like "Ian Hislop is a socialist" or similar....?

Actually "running around like a wet hen waiting to be caught" is courtesy of the Duke of Wellington.
