Often there are instances where flights cannot land due to poor visibility but they are taking off. I've experienced this when departing from Ronaldsway on various occasions, especially early mornings going way back to the Manx ATP days. Something that always makes me wonder is that if we can take off in those conditions, but not land, other than panic, what is the procedure if an emergency is declared on take off and you have to get back? It's seems like putting the aircraft into a vulnerable situation in fog with no alternative landing facility close by. Can you enlighten me? If the departure airfield is below landing minima, then you need to have an airfield within one hours flying time with an engine inoperative, that is forecast to be at or above landing minima an hour either side of the expected arrival time at the airfield. However, in the extremely unlikely event that a situation developed that meant that you needed to get the aircraft on the ground quickly (unconfined fire for example) then you do whatever you need to do to preserve life. John Wright
EasyJet and Liverpool has been a mess the last 2 days. im at Ronaldsway now, very windy. I’m meeting someone off the delayed Flybe. Took off at 21.12 an hour and twenty minutes late. Originally due in on yesterday’s Easyjet which was cancelled and they transferred to today, which was cancelled at 6pm. EasyJet website has had multiple crashes in its disruption section over last 24 hours. Unable to log in, transfer and get hotel. Phone assistance stops at 8pm and chat wasn’t operating the passenger has had to book and pay for the second Easyjet, hotel overnight last night and Flybe. For which they’ll claim back the hotel and get refunds of the EZY LPL IOM legs yesterday and today. Easyjet ground handling at Liverpool haven’t been particularly helpful. Cancelled yesterday, they put us in the Crown Plaza, dinner and breakfast included, and rebooked on today. Obviously I’d rather have got home yesterday, but as that was impossible they made it as painless as it could be.

Amadeus
Our flight last week on Sunday was cancelled due to the first big storm and easyjet arranged the first night accomodation and booked us on the wednesday flight as nothing was available before that. That was from gatwick and the hotel was in Brighton, so if we hadn't had the rental car we would have had issues getting there but all worked ok. Went back to airport the next day and they esentially told us no chance before wednesday, either fly with someone else or get hotels and claim costs back. We did the latter and made a road trip out of it. First time seeing Stonehenge Filed the receipts a few days ago and got a positive reply within 48 hours, money is on the way now. All in all not too bad a treatment from easyjet.

The same limits apply for take off and landing, but different considerations apply to both. With a take off you will obviously be in the turbulent conditions for a much shorter period of time than on approach, this because the rate of climb will be about four or five times that of the rate of decent on final approach. Take off on runway 21 here can be done in strong south west winds which would put runway 26 out of limits. However, for landing, the cloud will need to be up above 1000 feet due to the approach minima associated with that runway. As runway 21 is not grooved, maximum landing masses are severely limiting if the runway is wet. In those conditions you can’t land on it with a full passenger load with anything other than minimum fuel. Both the Q400 and ATR can use it for take off, but only the Q400 can use it for landing. Took off from that shorter runway in the 146 once. Mental wind on the nose, and got up quite easily (or so it seemed from my seat).
