Yes. It would have been interesting if the SNP had managed to get independence prior to Fred the Shred and co. bankrupting RBS. The debts would have dwarfed Scotland's economy and there would have been no Alistair Darling with a UK bail out for them. Unless of course RBS had moved to London in the interim.

They are most certainly looking to drop the word 'Scotland' from their title. I frequently receive updates from them referring to themselves as just Royal Bank.

If enough people complain to the Treasury Minister, then perhaps he may pick up the telephone to complain. Sadly I think his influence these days are somewhat diminished.

Well ironically I went to pay a tax bill the other day. Government offices was closed at 2:30 so Boot (who seems to have made a pronouncement that the bank sorts itself out) has made himself look a bit of a tit as they’re still on restricted hours themselves. So I doubt Cannan can do anything either as how can he tell IOM Bank to do something that government isn't even doing? It’s about time everyone got back to work and stopped dragging this nonsense out. Protracted laziness and bad management is going to kill the economy.

Why on earth would anyone phone the Treasury Minister about a private company?

Probably because the Isle of Man Government is the Isle of Man Bank's largest single entity customer both in terms of deposits and regular payment transactions. The Isle of Man Treasury is the Ultimate Beneficial Owner of all Isle of Man Government accounts.  Also, the Social Security Division falls under the remit of the Isle of Man Treasury so they have responsibility for the issuing of state pensions and benefits -- any major decision about retail branches being open would have obvious implications for recipients of those payments, so it would make sense to have some avenue of communication with the Treasury Minister so updates can be centrally communicated internally to different affected divisions of the Isle of Man Treasury.

Especially as Treasury have been encouraging all OAPs and other benefits receivers to have them paid into bank accounts which they can't then access other than through atms which are frequently out of order or cash!!

Thank goodness it was owned by the RBS in 2008.

I know what you mean, but had it not been taken over by Natwest in 1965 and become part of RBS later on, it would have remained a boring local bank and it is highly unlikely that it would have become involved in the effects of the overreaching and casino banking that got the big boys into trouble. The local business- company number 1 as it was then- has been sound and profitable throughout. What would have been more interesting is if the UK government had stood behind the UK banks but not any accounts held outside the UK. Why should UK taxpayers do that, you might ask. That would definitely have caused a little panic. They wouldn't have done it of course because it would have wrecked the tax haven network and hurt the City and the mega rich. Surprised that TJN didn't make more of it but I suppose they're not really that smart.

RBS is toxic as a brand. The English network has already been rebranded NatWest.

Yes, they even attempted to spin-off part of their business under the Williams & Glyn's brand/name as well. That ended up being another waste of money.

ETA: Leopards, spots and all that.

That was a punishment handed down by the EU, that benign trading bloc with no dictatorial powers, as a punishment for the UK government takeover. Long story that can be abbreviated to "total charade " .
