More women in politics is great!

It does seem to be a change.  I did the figures for 2012 as well, and women made up 24% of candidates then, so about the same as in 2016.   It may be encouraged by seeing more women in national (IOM) politics and it might be that once there is a 'critical mass' on an authority, more women consider putting themselves forward.   There are still a few places where there are no women such as Patrick or Ramsey where all 9 nominees are male and there was only one woman nominate out of 12 in 2016 and the same in 2012.

More generally it's worth pointing out that there were more people standing overall in 2012 with only two vacancies after nomination (25 in 2016, 13 in 2021) and 16 electoral contests out of a possible 30[1] (8 in 2012, 9 out of 28 in 2021).

[1]  That's counting the separate wards in Douglas and Ramsey and now Garff and Arbory and Rushen.

There's been some bemusement about Christian not standing for re-election in Douglas, but it's got to be pointed out that there's a massive shift in who is on the Council already happening.  This is in part due to the reduction in the number of councillors from 18 to 12 (so it's their own stupid fault) but it also marks a lot of long-time councillors stepping down, though this already had been happening.

One of the odd things about Douglas Council is that nearly half its members 8 of 18) had been elected in by-elections since the original 2016 elections - or rather non-elections as only two or the six wards were contested.  So there were already a fair few new kids on the block, some of whom had been annoying Christian.  Six of these are standing again - and one of the missing two is Jon Joughin, who is trying to regain his Keys seat, though he seems happy to remain Mayor even if not on the Council and his wife seems to be standing in his place.

But of the other ten who got in in 2016, no less than five are not standing again.  Not only Christian is going, but long-timers such as Richie McNicholl, Elizabeth Quirk, Carol Crawley (ex-Malarkey) and even Raina Chatel, who it feels like has been on the Corpy since the end of the Ice Age, is stepping down.  Only Stephen Pitts remains of the old gang.

So it may well be that Christian didn't stand because he thought that even if he did get elected there wouldn't be enough votes for him to stay on as Leader among the new councillors.

Presumably eventually, though Joughin is still showing as Mayor on the website.  I suppose she'll take over either on his formal nomination or  his election (hey, it's Douglas East, anything can happen).  If still means he gets lot of pictures in the paper in the interim though, unlike the other candidates.

It's all perfectly legal (and not uncommon in the UK) and I doubt many people will say "Oooh he's got a big chain - I'll vote for him!", but it still doesn't feel right, given that the Mayor is supposed to be 'non-political' for their year of office.  And the fact he remains Mayor with casting vote after the elections, even though not an elected member of the Council, is also a bit worrying.  The last would apply to Chatel as well of course.

Agreed SJ.

What they have done is appalling crap. These people are nobodies (compared to Bee Gees). They suffer from small-minded narcissistic delusions of their own self-importance. They should not have their names anywhere near this statue.

Somehow I doubt most of them knew their names would be on it.

Only half the story. That’s only the unveiling/dedication plaque.

This is the plaque on the plinth.

I don't get the unveiling plaque thing. Seems a bit pointless when there's already one on the floor. what happens to the unveiling plaque now?

I think it goes on the side of it somewhere. That place wasn't ready yet or something so it was removed again for now.
