  1. Are they also fitting new water meters to properties? I saw MUA go around one estate and they’ve dug up and replaced every single water meter, is that going to be the new stealth tax?
  2. Just another example of why there should be an all island rate system, my rates pay towards the Western Civic amenity and I think I’ve been there once in 10 years, I always use the Northern amenity because it’s more convenient for me.
  3. These increases will really start to bite now, there were already very few incentives to stay on the IOM and there is even less now.
  4. Roads were really icy this morning around 7am, my car was twitching quite a bit especially Bray Hill and QB but I did 20-30mph most of the way, some absolute clowns about jamming the anchors on and sliding about, clearly expecting magic to happen between the contact patch and icy road surface. After skating about a bit I dropped 5 PSI out of both front tyres and that helped tremendously, wonder if anyone else did the same? Asking for a friend but if you can see someone is about to plough into the back of your stationary vehicle can you legally jump a red? because clearly quite a few had never heard of something called engine braking down Bray Hill and I was certainly eying up the left hand turn as an exit route.
  5. Any skid pan training won’t help when most drivers just pick the cheapest tyres possible when replacement is due.
  6. I first started gambling with Hittin it big around 15 months ago, I’ve probably spent in the region of £500-600 in that time and won nothing so far, but it’s only money I was spending on lottery tickets anyway, I would say in that time the odds have winning have actually gone down, very rarely do you see a comp that’s only sold say 40-50% of tickets which was fairly common when I started. Biggest thing is don’t believe the posts saying it’s a low number of entrants and thus better odds, by the time a few of those posts go out it’s never shy of being 80% sold through. I tend to go for the big cash, car or instant win comps which are typically £1.99 - £2.99 a go. The entry list is viewable to all so I do believe it’s kosher, however you’ll see people buying £30-£50 worth of tickets in one go.
  7. Bus driver should have checked the bus was completely empty, judging by this guys state I’m guessing he fell asleep and was slumped out of initial sight. Young man in video is extremely agitated, you can see he’s not thinking clearly whatsoever, anyone else would’ve located the emergency exit using the torch on their phone or called the emergency services, especially when it appears the gates were locked and it was difficult to get out. Two lessons will be learnt, driver will check his bus every single time and the angry young man will question some of his life choices, hopefully he’ll avoid the criminal damage charges by just paying up for the replacement window.
  8. It’s a service provided to the public, so I’m glad they haven’t made a substantial profit, I’ve no doubt there will be cost savings to be had though.
  9. Yes that is something I’ve weighed up, but a charger installation was around £500 when I last looked, it seems MUA then install a separate meter which I assume they’ll be another fee, it’s also only for off peak electricity, handy for fridge/freezer but I wouldn’t be able to run the likes of a washing machine at night without annoying the neighbours. Anyone buying a new EV will benefit from a service plan, things like charger installation but will be absolutely hammered with depreciation which will likely wipe off any savings initially made. In the second hand market the servicing difference between an EV and regular ICE car isn’t that much, I service my own car and the only difference would be oil, oil filter and an air filter, oil + filter costs me around £40 every 6 months, air filter was about £8 and I replace that once a year. VED is the same price as my current diesel, I get 55-60mpg consistently and I rarely have any need to park on Douglas prom so again, no benefit there.
  10. I’ve been quite tempted with an EV after seeing used Nissan leaf price drops recently but with electricity costs rising, VED increase and now insurance +150% it’s put me right off. I can’t see there is any incentive to owning an EV now.
  11. Morgan’s pies which is a shame, a relatively new business who worked extremely hard to establish themselves and appeared to have a decent market for their products, I wonder how much energy costs are to blame? must put quite the squeeze on original margins. Ross bakery was also for sale around the same time, has anyone bought them yet? Another very similar story of someone working hard to build up their business from scratch.
  12. I quite like some of the Sainsbury’s products but some of them are 2 or 3 times the price that Sainsbury’s charge, how on earth is that justified? If they could just pick a store and run a franchise I think it would be a lot more successful.
  13. It’s actually stopped me going there, if he could just tone it down a bit the videos would be a lot more palatable, it’s just all the jumping with excitement like a little puppy I find too much, toxic positivity is the new name for it I believe.
  14. I hope this is being factored into specific EV insurance rather than hitting everyone’s pockets. Within time I suspect we will see a battery restorer/dismantler locally who could either make the battery safe for onwards shipping or repair the whole thing locally.
  15. I was quite surprised to see her actually listed as doing a gig here, I would’ve thought she’d have regarded the IOM as some sort of backwater. If she doesn’t do a gig here and then rip the back out of the Isle of Man at some point in the near future I’ll be very surprised. I don’t actually mind her views, probably because I don’t take anyone’s views that literally, somewhere in the middle is the truth and all that jazz.
  16. They use a small telehandler to both load and unload and trying to negotiate live traffic lanes when loading is near impossible.
  17. Any loss of competition is a bad thing, Aviva underwrite policies for a lot of brokers, I’m fairly certain that most of the Government vehicles are insured with Aviva, or at least they were. I’m currently with CTH who underwrite the policy from Tower/RSA less than Tower can do it themselves, no idea how that works. I can’t believe how cheap insurance is, especially when you speak to those who have had a bump recently, hundreds in car hire, weeks to get their vehicle fixed as parts on back order, final claim ends up being thousands for the smallest repairs.
  18. I don’t agree with all the recent changes in the Highway Code, I’m happy enough giving way to pedestrians when going from a minor to a major road, however when going from a major to a minor I’m always concerned someone will go into the back of me, people just aren’t expecting you to stop. The recent changes have also meant that some pedestrians exercise their right and will just walk infront of traffic regardless of whether it’s safe to do so or not, in short the mentality is that pedestrians don’t need to watch for traffic now as they have right of way. If someone has been hit at one of these junctions the follow up will be quite interesting, pedestrian will have right of way, but there has been instances I’ve been waved to carry on by the pedestrian so it suggests not everyone is happy with the recent changes. I will always make sure it’s safe to cross regardless of priority because drivers just don’t pay attention (typically the same ones that drive past Zebra crossings with peds waiting to cross and through red lights)
  19. Just checked mine after reading the above and it’s still showing the remaining balance as it should be.
  20. Same happened with Pizza Napoli, they established a very successful business in Ramsey and then ruined it by opening one in Douglas and putting all their effort/attention into that instead, effectively abandoning Ramsey and all those that helped make it happen, thankfully Pizza Nista have swept up all those customers and appear to be doing an absolute roaring trade at the weekend. ‘Truth’ is at least trying to lease or sell the Ramsey operation but I still think it’s a smack in the face for all the loyal customers that helped support the business initially. Time and time again you see businesses trying to expand into Douglas, yes it’s a bigger pond but equally much bigger fish, it will very quickly either fly or die.
  21. Starting salary is rubbish, a lot of unhappy coppers at the moment who are regretting their life choices, it’s not just a job, it’s a whole new way of life, well it is until you retire and then you’ll be allowed to have your personality back.
  22. Isn't that the whole concept of fast food? Mcdonalds screwed up when they last had a refit though and have helped encourage people to use the drive through rather than sit in, it used to comfortably fit two vehicles all around the perimeter, they then got rid of the angled parking and must have lost at least 10 spaces. A very strange decision to fit another drive through screen which has the same person taking orders so it's effectively still one at a time anyway, so in short they got rid of around 10 spaces and made it harder to navigate/park for the sake of removing 2 cars away from the drive through but in doing so people can no longer drive around the perimeter due to being blocked by the drive through, so the vehicles back up onto the main road now instead. I'm still amazed nobody has opened up a second Mcdonalds on the island.
  23. The free for all parking goes to show how many people actually need parking, so why is a park and ride not being reconsidered?
  24. Implementing a 20mph zone is as far as their solution goes, the short cut that is Minorca Hill - Old Laxey Hill is exactly the same and speed humps make zero difference as its used as a rat run.
