My Goodness, Mr Hall is copying not just the Catholic Church, but everyone from UK MPs1 to Daily Express Columnists2

Why shouldn't he copy whoever he wants if he shares their view? We still have free speech here (ATM)

No one is saying he doesn't have freedom of speech - but the man has passed off the work of others, with no recognition of their efforts or contribution.

He's plagiarized the Pope, for goodness sake:

Zac Hall - "[this] will, in my opinion, constitute a real and grave anthropological backward step."

Pope Francis (When Archbishop of Buenos Aires) - "Marriage precedes the state: it is the basis of the family, the basic cell of human society, and as such is prior to all laws and the Church itself. That is why the passage of the Bill would constitute a real and grave anthropological step backwards."

Don't you think he should have at least acknowledged the source - rather than saying "... in my opinion ..." saying "... as Pope Francis said ..."

Oh, I agree totally. I had not heard him say "in my opinion". but even if he'd stood up, opened the bible and recited it word for word, he would still be making his point. Wouldn't he ?

How has he plagiarized the pope?

If he shares the view he can say the same words if he wants.

You're confusing academic plagiarism with people researching to find their own view. It's not for profit, it's not for academic advantage. If his speech happens to be a summary of other views put concisely, so be it. That happens a lot with religious dogma.

If Lib Vannin have the same or similar views to their UK counterparts, is that plagiarism? Same if IOM govt use the research and copy UK legislation to use?

Chinahand...You are making a mountain out of a molehill IMO, confusing someones views with academic principles.

Plagiarism is simply taking another's words and passing them off as your own, without recognizing the original source.

Multiple politicians have been accused of Plagiarism in exactly the same context as this - it is down to honesty and nothing to do with financial gain or academia.

Joe Biden plagiarized Neil Kinnock,

Rand Paul Wikipedia.

It is lazy, it is dishonest, it is disrespectful of your audience and the person who worked to find those words in the first place.

If this was a sentence or two, I'd agree this would be a total non-issue, but 3/4 of a 7 page speech is simply cut and pasted directly from the work of others, with no acknowledgement that what he is saying isn't original.

That says something about Zac Hall.

For me the copying of a UK MP's speech from the House of Commons really takes the biscuit.

Tim Loughton Conservative, East Worthing and Shoreham 12:40 pm, 21st October 2015

... glaring inequality resulting from the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act whereby same-sex couples are still entitled to continue in a civil partnership, to take up a civil partnership or to enjoy the recent extension of marriage, while opposite-sex couples have only the option of conventional marriage, albeit by a larger range of religious institutions. That is not fair. It gives rise to an inequality in what was billed as an “Act to promote equalities”.
