Experiment in direct democracy

It appears Gawnes quest for democratic credibility know's no bounds and an experiment on his democracy site will lead to a vote on actual proposals in Keys.

Rest assured the day after that vote is done details of all the fake accounts set up by various people on there together with screen shots and user account details will be posted on here. You cannot add any credibility to this movement whatsoever when you have no controls in place over multiple users and other questionable accounts you register and allow to vote and therefore determine policy. Also when you don't handle people's data properly and in observance of the guidance provided in relation to the Data Protection Act.

From what I hear the Twitter experience on Friday is lining up to be interesting too. Stick to granny farming. The last time a democratic Facebook group was set up about the Promenade plans you chose to ignore the feedback when it suited you.

So you want to use this place to post up stolen or leaked data that you claim is a breach of the DPA?

We'll take a pass on that thanks, you can post it on your own platform and deal with the consequences.

We only have your word for it.

If you want to publish it on Pastebin or something and link to it, that's fine, go right ahead but I'd prefer it not be hosted on our servers.

Fine. It doesn't really matter. The more important thing is to highlight what dangerous a sham this exercise is. Why on earth would you allow an unvalidated poll involving numbers of non existent people to drive a vote in Keys? It's a shocking abuse of democracy to provide an election stunt.

Surely you can get people to register online against their own Tax & NI numbers which then provides a level of validity that the person signed up to vote is actually a real person?

For a politician to rely on an internet poll to decide how to vote in Tynwald shows either huge naivety about the reality of the internet or incredibly poor judgement.

both of which apply to gawneless anyway !

Maybe but why would people offer up that information? Especially if they are going to share it with third parties which their T & Cs allow them to do. It's not really that secure for such personal data which could be stolen and used for nefarious purposes. At the end of the day it's not you.gov or any official secure political polling site. It's is an over inflated hobby project for a politician to use as a backdrop to an election campaign that has no proper governance around it and no proper or effective account validation process around it. So why the hell should a vote in Tynwald be cast on the basis of its unvalidated outputs from people who often probably don't even exist. You might as well allow people to vote via Facebook or Manx-forums.

He's done this all wrong. He should have set up an X-Factor style phone voting system using premium rate numbers and texts at a £1 a go,

To vote for a solid gold prom, add 01.

If your choice is the monorail, add 02.

Etc.

Just as much validity, just as many controls, and a nice profit to boot.

Oh bugger it, why don't we just do as we have for the last 1000 years? It's got us where we are today Reggie!

But apparently we have voter apathy according to Gawne. I'd argue that actually we don't. We just have a lot of wankers standing for politics that nobody gives a shit about. This sort of thing is hardly going to improve that.
