We Have To Eat In Order To Exist

Good post. Better than this one anyway. I know very little about these payments, the countryside care scheme or whatever, but it is clearly mental that people who own lots of land are paid money from the government just for owning lots of land. I'm fairly sure it has been discussed on here before, when it was pointed out how much money David Anderson was receiving through this. It was an awful lot, and having our chief minister benefitting well is clearly a dubious situation. Things are unlikely to change if the leader of the group of people able to change it is a significant recipient. Even though production subsidies have frequently caused problems in farming across Europe surely some production is better than just paying to have the hedges cut now and again, or whatever it is exactly that this money is for.

If you are not feeling peeved about the levels of these payments consider this ........

The Island is roughly 141,440 acres, of this reputedly 107,210 acres is under agriculture say 75% of the land which is supported by 6.5 million of public money. Alarmingly, farming forestry and fishing combined contribute only 0.5% of GDP. A Bargain !!

I would seriously question what criteria was/is used to arrive at 107, 210 acres!

Indeed. I wouldn't mind if the payments were made based on improved productivity and for actually working the land..... but they're not! Quite the opposite.

It's surreal,

Aside from the utter stupidity of giving big landowners money just for ..er, being big landowners, it's just daft subsidising ordinary farming folk to run loss making farms

So unless our government gets big chunks of money from the EU to subsidise them, it has to end (industrial farming isn't very green anyway)

Not opposed to them receiving a trial basic income, as everyone should get that one day when robots have taken all the jobs

The Isle of Man gets zero from EU subsidies, not being part of the EU. But Phil Gawne when he was the Minister for Ag and Whatever, and his predecessors too no doubt, argued that the farmers need to have parity with their UK counterparts. The need, need it. (erm, other wise we all die).

There needs to be an MHK who had the bollocks, or at least the moral compass, to bring this up in Tynwald for a review. Hell with it, have a select committee and a public inquiry. Then we'd soon see which of thse landowners need (some no doubt will) the subsidy as they put their case, publicly, to the committee.

Er, demonstrates the influence the farmers still have today? How many in senior positions in Tynwald?

Now of course, enthusiastically joined by wealthy, non-farming landowners as well who equally have to be worshipped and be in receipt of subsidies because they're, er, wealthy.

They won't take all the jobs but that aside if someone who owns land cannot pay for its upkeep etc then they should hand it to government.

The farmers of yesteryear were the powerhouse on the island... to all intents and purposes, still are.
