They've known about this for months, it's allegedly Island Drainage cutting corners that have caused the problem by not laying the tarmac correctly. I believe they binned the site manager in charge at the time the work was done.

Just what they are doing in Ramsey, cutting so many corners and as for H&S ! cutting stone with no goggles, no gloves ,no hard hat no leg protection, dust going all over pedestrians walking past and the two sunny days we had last week they seemed to have the days off ! maybe the new minister for infrastructure will get them sorted .

He could also look into the specialists that are repairing the swingbridge and how they missed the major problem that should have been spotted in the original survey not at the end of the contract, handy that for another three months work !

...it's allegedly Island Drainage cutting corners ...

The very same Company whose errant truckwheel killed a teenage cyclist at The Hawthorne...mechanics didn't have access to a suitable torque wrench was in the Coroners Report.

Also had an employee fall through an 'unguarded skylight' at Swagelok whilst working on the roof...failed to carry out a risk assessment, insufficient staff training.

Cutting corners...pfft.

TBT.

Time to get emailing your MHK and ask WTF is going on with the Peel road fiasco. Their contact details are in the front of the phone book. Jeff Robinson of the DOI needs to tell us why his "so called" engineers didn't spot the problems as they occurred. It might be because they can't see whats going on from their comfy warm offices. We've all seen the contractors, occasionally, working on the road but where oh where are the "so called" engineers. Sat on their fat arses pretending they're busy to their couldn't care less bosses that's where they are.. grrrrrrr. Proper site engineers are required to inspect and ensure WE the tax payer are getting value for money, not hide in their offices from the rain, get out there and do your jobs you lazy spongers.

Just in the interests of balance.......

DOI set the spec, carry out a tender and award the contract.

Said contractor cocks something up, which is picked up during the delivery phase.

Said contractor told to fix it at their cost.

Isn't that how things work on construction / civil works. Yes, first time, on time etc.....but reality sucks at times. And it should be a factor when considering future tenders as to how previous contractors have performed, but what else could the DoI have done in this case. The comments about not picking it up earlier are conjecture as we have to rely on pub gossip for 'knowing' when it went wrong.

And to re-balance my attempt at balance.........I think the Peel Road works are a complete clusterfuck, piecemeal, patchwork absolute farce of a project which must be a complete waste of resources the way it has been done. It just looks like they are doing, redoing moving, coming back, temp surfaces..........

I'd be very surprised if the taxpayer wasn't paying for the fuck up. As for future tenders taking into account previous performance, that's a joke - if you knew of the performance of a previous incarnation of IDG. I believe at the time it was stated by the then DOT or DHPP or whatever it was then that they'd never be given a government job ever again. Funny how things change in a few short years.

Manxman8180 you said "The comments about not picking it up earlier are conjecture as we have to rely on pub gossip for 'knowing' when it went wrong.

My point was that we should have our own project engineers ON SITE checking what is going on all the time so that this kind of shit doesn't happen. Catch the problems as they happen and stop them in there tracks. The problem is the government engineers want to sit in their warm offices not stand out in the rain with the workers making sure its all going to plan.

I'm Goverment Engineer. I would be interested to see Johnny Fs evidence that we sit in the warm offices out of the rain. I've been soaked to the skin at least four times in the past few weeks. (but not on Peel Road, though). I would also in no way discribe my office as "warm".
