Hospital baclogs, Cataract and other

I cannot recall any recent comment on the current backlogs at Nobles - positive or negative.

I finally had a cataract operation after several years on the waiting list and it must be said (speaking as a layman) that the whole procedure was carried out in a thoroughly professional, efficient and user friendly manner. Mr Shafiq and his theatre nurses were exceptional, as were the reception people and the nurses who looked after patients pre-op and post-op. Hopefully inroads are being made into this particular backlog.

Whoever recruited this team to Manxcare to tackle this enormous problem are to be congratulated. Perhaps the way forward for Nobles is to co-opt outside professionals when possible?

I am pleased you had such a good service and hope the op has improved your eyesight. I was referred to the hospital via the optician last year. I had a sceduled appointment for 15th June 2022 for a review but this was cancelled on 8th June 2022 and await a further appointment date. I am not sure of the backlog but accept that delays can happen. As long as it doesn't take a further 12 months to reschedule and my eyesight deteriates further. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I see there is a private clinic that can do cataract operations for around £2500 that  has been set up  in Victoria road Douglas , one of the former consultants from Nobles   is doing the operations ,

I cant understand  why our private wing is still closed down , with all the BUPA   and other  private medical schemes  that some companies  provide  to their employees on the island  you would think  someone like Spire health would be interested in setting up a facility here ,, and the possibility of bringing  some very experienced and talented  consultants  to the island ,

Well co-opting outside professionals is what Manx care does all the time - both is sending patients across for specialised assessment and treatment and in bringing specialists to the Island for clinics.  But actions such as the one to tackle the cataract backlog are only really useful as one-offs.  The ideal is that such situations should never arise in the first place and that common operations, such as for cataracts, should be done locally and speedily.

I've asked the same question. When they can be bothered to reply, it's so vague that it's worthless. Hooper as usual just passes the buck on this.

It’s Mr Khan who’s doing the private clinic, he used to do a substantial amount of private work at nobles but that stopped when private wing was closed.

At the moment they are using the private wing for the various extra clinics like cataracts & orthopedic I believe.

Also renal are using part for their appointments as no room in other wing anymore

Well I was quoted up to 5 years for a operation to deal with  osteoarthritis in my ankle which is not good as its suprisingly ! getting worse by the day. Only 4 1/2 years to go now . Meanwhile have it in both knees now too so going to be fun in a few years time.

If you’ve got a spare £5/6k you’ll get it within the month!

And they'd snap your arm off for it! Makes you wonder what we pay our taxes for.

so his knees and ankle would be better, but his arm would be snapped? And then when they fix his arm, what do they take?

What's going on? We need to be told.

It would be interesting to know if Manx Care have managed to deliver the 600 cataract operations that they claimed they would have managed by the end of March and whether it cost the £1.86 million they said it would (ie £3100 per operation).

I only know of one person so far, a friend of my mother who was on list for nearly 3 years, my mother has been waiting 2 years with consultant saying they need doing urgently. She’s given up driving & considering paying to go private if no news on operation in next 3 months
