To the best of my knowledge, there has never been an active hooker on the Island in my adulthood

Your knowledge is flawed. Just because you don't see them tottering around on street corners, doesn't mean they don't exist. They're just a bit more discreet over here.

 yup, we sure are ;)

being open to offers after a vodka doesn't count

As usual with a controversial subject, interesting thread.............................

There are a smidge over 100 registered heroin addicts on the Isle of Man. (Don't argue please, it's a fact).

This being the case, where are the classic "smack head burglaries" to fund this habit ?. Domestic burglary is very rare on the Island.

Second port of call for your average heroin addict (male or female) short of a few quid is usually prostitution.

Now I will stick my neck out. To the best of my knowledge, there has never been an active hooker on the Island in my adulthood (I'm 34). Why is this ?. It is the oldest profession in the world, occurs everywhere except on the Isle of Man.

I don't know what Island you've been living on but you are not looking hard enough. Its out there. Its pretty easy to find if you want.

In relation to heroin users you say "registered ones" - that presumably means that they are getting methodone so probably don't have the incentive to rob your house. Therefore your argument just does not stand up as its the non registered ones that have to steal to feed a habit not those that turn up at a clinic to get sorted..

I also seriously doubt you will ever find a woman who "likes" doing it - particularly street prostitution. Some might like the money but i doubt there's any who "like" running the gaunlet of freaks, pervs, and nutters to get abused for a few quid. That is an unbelievable naive comment.

I really cannot see where your argument is going.

37 year old man arrested on all five murders in Suffolk.

whatever happened to being 'innocent until proven guilty'?? I'm not saying wether it is actually the man or not, but the media has certainly made up their mind and IF he turns out to be innocent.... his reputation is ruined. Which.. isn't actually fair at all. He's already been suspended from work (which is a natural move) and he won't be returning there most likely regardless of the outcome. Taking on prostitutes is something done in secret.... no more for this guy!

If he is guilty fine..... but no one knows that yet.

He's only been arrested for 'questioning'. We all know how police can get the wrong end of the stick!

Same man has just been released on police bail.

The second man has been 'charged'.

So... brings me back to the point, what of that first man who was made out to be the killer... and now seems he didn't.

hboy.

Thanks for the reply, good to see a different opinion.

Regarding Heroin. I had resonably good relationships with 3 heroin addicts in my previous job (Police). They were all registered, and took methodone, but ONLY when they could'nt get heroin. Apparently methodone is nothing like Heroin, so an addict will always take the real stuff when possible. Never found out how it was funded though.

When i was in "the job" I saw a lot of strange things. I heard a lot of rumors, and i spoke to a hell of a lot of people. I've seen prosecution files for the most bizzare crimes you can imagine, even a case of beastiality. But I never saw a previous conviction for soliciting (on the Island) and never heard so much as a rumor about an active prostitute.

I do not belive that there is an active (Soliciting) prostitute on the Island.

As for the "enjoying it" comment. I did say "a small minority" and no, I don't see them as street crawlers. More as what you would call high class with a stable client base. I saw a documentery about this a couple of years back, and it seems that most punters just wanted a bit of a shoulder to cry on, and a bit of TLC.

The "street" prostitute is of course totally different, and I think that their lives must be a living hell.

The last brothel was opposite the Star pub, next to the police station, in Market street probably closed for 50+ years.

When the Hawaian bar was open under the casino it was always asaid tyhat you would not be able to set up a brothel on the Island because you could get it for free down there.

A guy in Michael got done for living off immoral earnings about 15 years ago. He advertised his wife and sent her out. It was a prostitution racket, not just escort work.

He is back now with his new thai bride!

If a lawyer and a copper doesn't know about it, then it's most likely not happening :)

The size of the community probably prevents it, would be a very difficult profession to have over here without it completely ruining your life.

I have to agree with Ans, i had heard whispers a couple of years ago and this summer one of my mates admitted that he knows of at least 1 who he frequents every now and again. I thought this was bollocks until he divulged the details and to be fair, its not hard to keep it quiet if you really wanted to.

Aslo i remember an incident just before i moved back over here where a woman was arrested for soliciting in the Douglas area, that would have been about 4 years ago. I have no idea if the case went to court but i do remember the incident because the accused lived at the back of our house!
