Bands that have played in the Isle of Man

I remember about 20 years ago a bloke used to knock round Douglas. He had longish hair and always wore a head band. His one claim to fame and, as far as I could make out, only topic of conversation, was that he played drums for Motörhead at the Lido. Their guy couldn't play so he was like an impromptu "Is there a drummer in the house?" stand-in. It was a good story and I lapped it up the few few times I heard it. Just not sure it was true.

Joey Gallagher !!!.

Was his name Russell?

That rings a bell. I used to drink in The Central back then. I think he lived up Broadway or nearby. His girlfriend was a year or two older and I think she was enamoured by the story. I'm not being disparaging and would love the story to be correct. I might have to look up the newspapers to check it out.

Yeah sounds about right, he lived on that little terrace where you cut through to Bathurst Street. Other half called Sandra I think. They were crackers, although both dead nice really. Pretty sure he claimed to have drummed for someone else too, but I can't remember really. Haven't seen either of them in years.

Googling Motorhead and Isle of Man brings up ...

Lemmy’s Dad apparently lived here.

The interviewer has played some great gigs here too as lead singer of Goldblade.

Lemmy was a true star

“He couldn't even remember my fucking name. I went to meet him on the Isle of Man, where he lived. He'd been kicked out of the church. Was some kind of superintendent in a hospital. He was a creep with a bald head and glasses. I didn't' fancy him much..."

Says a lot about the sort of people who escape to the IOM. He’d probably be head of Nobles Hospital now. Or perhaps even an MLC ..
