Appears that the last time it was discussed in Tynwald was 2008 then?

Do you know if any Dept records causes Derek?

IN February 2018 Mr Malarkey promised that a Strategy would be published later this year ,It was reported in the local press in February and the same article carried this information from him ."

""In response to a Tynwald question last month, Mr Malarkey admitted he could not provide a ’meaningful’ rate for the number of people killed or seriously injured in accidents in the Isle of Man, to compare with other jurisdictions.

He said there were issues with data collection and complications over the common definition of ’serious injury’ and the follow-up of injuries after a victim attended hospital.""

The whole thing smacks of we don't actually intend doing anything , but we'll spend a fortune on meaningless consultations and delaying everything and hope we can then blame Brexit.

What risk assessment do you base 100mph on, and why?

Serious question - not trying to point score. I'm genuinely interested.

It isn't based on any risk assessment, it is a figure plucked out of the sky. It is based on being seen to do something while giving in to the petrol heads at the same time. A compromise if you will.

The data is all there. Although we aren't as sophisticated as some jurisdictions in recording all the elements of a collision, there is more than enough data there to give the high level answers that are needed to progress a national road safety strategy. Bill doesn't need to be embroiling himself at the tactical level, regarding particular routes, demographics or whatever. That is the job of whoever chairs the National Road Safety tasking group, to develop solutions with engineers, educators and enforcers.

We just need to get on with this. We put so much effort into safeguarding in other areas, but we seem to have a Government that really doesn't get the need for it on our roads. Its going to upset a few people, but save many more.

I thought as much - do you work for the DOI? They imposed similar controls on the Audi closed road event, but of course as soon as the road re-opened, the cars could travel as fast as the drivers wanted to.

There is just no substance, or evidence-based approach to so much that is going on. Things need to change.

Couldn't agree with you more , but this Government crew will do anything to not change the current position in any meaningful way.

At the same time in February    " Bill Henderson MLC called for road safety ’hot spots’ to be identified and remarked that jumping red lights had become ’quite popular these days "

It's sad really that this is what they think of as helping to produce a road safety strategy .They will say anything to distract from the bigger issues and spend a fortune doing nothing.

I feel for my former colleagues most in this. The police (for reasons never entirely clear) took over the road safety portfolio - cycling training, school crossing patrols, the whole nine yards, from the DOI about 4 years ago. They are now the ones 'leading' all this. Pam Trevellion got all the stuff completed and submitted before she left, and now it is just a political football.

Notwithstanding it was a worthy cause, compared to the amount of debate that went into the Abortion bill really makes me wonder where we are on this as a nation. Abortion affects a relative few, compared to road use - which is just about every one of us.

By the timescale, it sounds like another set of responsibilities the DOI abdicated from in the name of "savings"...?

Derek, sorry if this has already been answered, but do you know if those numbers include closed course m/c racing / practice fatalities or are they just open roads fatalities? To get a representative comparison with other jurisdictions I think we probably need to exclude the closed roads fatalities.

Just in passing, someone mentioned Malarkey the Home Affairs minister. Is he ill or something, or just keeping his head down ?

I agree with Derek on all his posts here. He has the experience and has seen it all; including much that he rather hadn't seen too. He could/should be the man that finally drags our traffic laws (As happened with the abortion bill) into the twentieth century. The twenty first might be asking too much. It's time there was some concerted action on this national shame and embarrassment before too many more lives are lost or ruined. Go for it Derek...

Just open roads fatalities. Racing incidents are never, ever included in the statistics, much in the same way Northants doesn’t include incidents at Silverstone.

the problem is on our open roads. Racing is racing.

So about 13.8 /100,000 per annum. Similar to the Bahamas, Belarus and Costa Rica. Yep. that's pretty crap and needs fixing.
