It's actually 273 metres of 30 metre wide starter extension (150 m at one end and 123 at the other) being widened to full width which is 46 metres. So, 273mx16m= 4368 square metres of asphalt on top of load bearing foundation.

There was a rumour, and I stress it was just that, of some remedial work to the seaward extension being the driver behind the huge size of the turning widening ! who knows you'll never be told the truth in any case .. pay up and shut up is gov. motto !

Wouldn't explain 100 plus metres of work though.

It's some really nice stone that rock armour, no wonder it cost so much.

It was £2m in the red because some fuckwit in Government didn't understand how exchange rates work.

Yeah, specifically Larvik. Famous for its stone. You could polish that stuff up beautifully.

Here's a picture of how they do it at Southampton. Also, notice the arrester bed instead of a RESA...that will have come in a lot cheaper than the 70 million ours cost!

The main runway at Southampton is 30 metres wide - funnily enough, the same width as IOM's starter strip that are being widened in their entirety...
