It almost needs a Nigel Farage character to start to pick up the narrative, talk borderline sense and to start to take the population with them. The island is insulated from the absolute maelstrom of issues that extant in the UK today and need to stop pissing around in the weeds and step up with a bold vision.

Globally it is getting yo shit or bust time, let alone on island

Christ on a bike Derek you can't be serious.  Farage pretends to be a man of the people, whereas he is a privately educated son of a millionaire stock broker. He has stirred up hatred towards foreigners, Muslims, refugees. He is leader of a party that has many prominent members who are racist, sexist and homophobic. He lives in Germany, where his children have German passports. He has caused more turmoil and division in British society in living memory. He has sunk the £ and conned half the population into giving up a whole raft of their rights and liberties so he and his cronies could make a fast buck on the markets out of the economy crashing into recession. He has failed to be elected as a UK MP on SEVEN occasions. I could go on. Politics for Nigel Farage is primarily an ego trip, and these people are the most dangerous and unpleasant. The Isle of Man doesn't need Farage. No one does.

It was interesting on Laura Kuenssberg this morning that people said they would prefer Martin Lewis or Alan Sugar to Rishi Sunak or Keir Starmer as Prime Minister.

They are looking for authenticity and the ability to relate to people.

Even our politicians talk at people rather than engaging with them.

Personally I would go for Lewis rather than Sugar. He knows his stuff.

I wouldn't have either unless they gave away some of their millions!

I vote for Jamie Oliver

Whatever your background it doesn’t disqualify you from being a “man of the people” ( Tony Benn being a prime example of that)

I’m no fan of Farage but he is no Tommy Robinson. Nor could you compare him to the leaders of the ultra right wing groups in Europe who seem to be gaining traction amongst their electorates.

” He lives in Germany, where his children have German passports” . Well “ fuck me backwards” as the old saying went, ( although I’ve not heard it for years).

The fact he wasn’t elected as an MP is neither here nor there. Lots of people stand on multiple occasions for parties and independents and don’t get in. Green Party members et al Well good on them for trying. At least they have  the courage of their convictions.

“ He has caused more turmoil and division in British society in living memory”.

He certainly shook things up, but unless you believe we should stick with the status quo forever why should he not with legitimate means in a democracy?

And as for him sinking the pound (?), and conning half the population into giving up a whole raft of their rights and liberties, I’ve never heard such nonsense.
The populace are beginning to get those back.

Like I said I’m no fan of Farage but without him I think  ( no I’m sure) the UK would have continued being a member ,and bound by,the constraints of the EU and all the disadvantages that brings.

For that alone he deserves our gratitude in spite of him not perhaps being the most likeable of characters

Anyway Derek didn’t say the Island needs Nigel Farage he said it needs a Nigel Farage type character 🙂

I’m not a massive fan of party politics as in the UK or even worse the US system. My solution would be for chief ministerial wannabees to declare before the election, and have a separate island-wide vote for the position. Other MHK candidates could declare who they support, and we could vote them in or otherwise with that in mind.

#1. You stand as an MHK or CM in a public election but not both. They are elected at the same time.

#2. The CM gets two terms and that is it. Once elected as a CM then cannot stand as an MHK again. They literally retire from politics for good.

That way everyone gets the same representation regardless of where the CM came from.

Does that include parish pump politics? Ex CM Tony Brown comes to mind.

Home Affairs and Justice Minister Jane Poole Wilson MHK has got her excuses in, as her department is asking for £2.2m as it was overbudget, for which its excuses are, weather and unexpected events. What unexpected events I do not know? Maybe the department needs to be increasing its charges, and focusing on the priorities and cutting out the frivolity eg, escorting motoring cavalcades around the TT course, unless it’s a real money spinner.

But it highlights these overspends are not merely due to pay increases.  As previously posted all the overspends need a comprehensive breakdown not bullet point overviews.  These depts give the impression of shrugging their shoulders knowing the tab will be picked up.

It’s not just the civil servants heading the departments that need to be responsible and be accountable, but perhaps the politicians as well. I can see the next financial year being worse than this year, as the Department will want their priorities enforced - Sea Terminal Customs etc.

This is precisely the point and is part of the expectancy culture that rules. "Money will always be made available no matter what happens because what happens if Treasury say 'No' ? We grind things to a halt and shrug".

So Treasury has little option other than to find the cash - and we all know where that comes from.

My idea is that the CM candidates stand as MHKs as well, and in the seat with the successful CM candidate there are 3 elected (Top 3 if that includes the CM elect, or top 2 plus CM elect if it doesn't).  I've always thought that the CM is too tied up in national issues to be a particularly effective local representative. And the successful CM shouldn't have to necessarily win his/her seat.  It's possible that a good CM candidate may have alienated his/her local electorate by taking difficult decisions in the national interest.  Being booted out because you voted to close the local squash club or whatever shouldn't bar you from the top job.

I don't mind the two terms idea.  Same as US, and from UK experience long serving PMs seem to outstay their welcome - eg Blair, Thatcher.

Yes I am serious. The place desperately needs a disruptor that can carry people with them

Seems that they have a frequent overspend of 2+ million, some of it hidden by drawing from tcb fund in previous years.

£34 million total employee costs 22/23. 85+% of total budget.

All of the recent armed activity seems to be aimed at stoking fear to justify job increases.  I haven't seen a policeman on patrol in onchan for 25 years.
