  1. Let’s be frank. It was a shit show befitting the Isle of Man Government. It was also a public demonstration of utter apathy, especially when you consider that “100 people” (Government and it’s public broadcasting mouthpiece always round up) is in fact approximately 1% of the electorate within the constituencies it was covering. A one-legged arse kicking competition at the annual Cronk-Y-Voddy games would get a better turn out.
  2. Exactly..by the time you added in all the extra security costs including lumps of concrete on Prospect Hill..I expect £50k was more likely the figure..
  3. It’s outrageous. My disposable income has been hammered as a resident of this..in the last two weeks alone I’ve moved my mortgage, bought a fedora hat, ordered a years supply of vitamin supplements for my cat, and bought a toilet for an African village. I’m almost fecking skint!
  4. Thank fuck they’re not filming Britain’s Greatest Little Prison whilst that spanner is inside!
  5. Anyone else noticed of late that Isle of Man Newspapers publish articles on social media that are purely and literally a headline..with no content when you click on it? And I mean, none.
  6. In answer to the original question..no. The reality is that it is the senior civil servants who run the Island, not politicians. Whilst most politicians come into politics with good intentions, many are quickly thwarted by civil servants giving them a raft of spurious reasons why something isn’t a good idea, or they make all the right brown nose noises, but then do everything in their power to move their idea along at a glacial pace. The only successful politicians are those whose intelligence, determination and whit is greater than the civil servants they are trying to work with to progress their idea..and such a beast is very few and far between. To be honest, if all MHKs went off sick for 6 months nobody would notice and the wheels would keep turning. Its my strong opinion that we only need 10 MHKs, paid very well so as to attract really strong candidates. As for Alf, he does seem to be hanging on by his fingernails..to be honest, who’d want his job. Howard just about got away with it using the “fake it until you make it” mantra and the fact a fair chunk of his tour of duty was in COVID when nothing else mattered anyway saw him through, but Alf seems to be running out of road.
  7. Let’s be realistic. In order to enforce this and potentially prosecute someone the Information Commissioner would need first to have grounds to suspect that your camera was recording images beyond your own boundary. Then they would need to obtain a warrant to enter your property and seize footage. I hardly think they are going to suddenly put together a hit squad tackling everyone with a Ringo door bell…to use one of their pet phrases, it wouldn’t be “proportionate ”.. Hang on though..this is the Isle of Man..where you can..(be a C&nt).
  8. Ditto. In the end I opened an account with Santander. They weren’t really much quicker to be honest, and the mobile banking app is shocking.
  9. An ego trip entirely in the wrong place. I suggest he sticks it in his back garden.
  10. To me it shows two things to be true. Government departments along with Treasury are incapable of forecasting their expenditure beyond more than a finger in the air - all the more frightening when it is a poorly kept secret that departments always try to over-egg their needs anyway - and secondly, senior management within the Civil Service and their respective Ministers and political members are shamelessly incompetent. No matter how the Treasury Minister is trying to mitigate the seriousness, the bottom line is that it is an utter shit show.
  11. Please let’s not waste another penny on these. The cost of reinstating the tracks will never be recouped. The propensity for DOI to totally f*ck things up is already more than proven, so please no more tax payers money…
  12. I sit corrected. Anyway, I intend to be cremated and go out with adding what I can to my carbon footprint.
  13. I’ve never stepped foot in my local church, nor intend to. Yet, I still pay £x per annum in my rates for it’s upkeep. Suck it up kids.
  14. I’ve read of any such award in Jersey or Guernsey..so more than like some trumped up wooden spoon.
  15. I feel sorry for the poor lady getting the Lt Gov’s Commemdation. WTF is that? Some plastic consolation prize? Considering a good chunk of the real gongs are dished out to people who have done a lot less than some genuinely deserving recipients, this would feel like a smack in the balls to me. I’d tell them to keep it.
  16. It will be interesting to see who ends up having ultimate beneficial interest in this new building..the church or a company being a subsidiary of LHC where the main shareholder is..the main man himself..
  17. I’m struggling to think of even 5 I would say are definitely earning their salary.
  18. And now the big guns are interfering..for me personally I have nothing against any church or religion, but it doesn’t belong in 21st Century politics and certainly not in Government. If there should be a religious representative by virtue of percentage of population, it would be a tight call between the Muslim faith and Living Hope! https://www.manxradio.com/news/isle-of-man-news/archbishop-of-york-calls-for-public-consultation-before-bishop-vote-changes/
  19. Yes. And in the Villa its not just for the Royal Hall, but also the Promenade Suite which is used regularly for smaller capacity events.
  20. As usual, the usual bunch of keyboard warrior experts are having a crack here. If I may, some straight facts having spoken to a number of the people at the coal face. Yes, the £1.6M could have been given to say the health service. But in reality, we all know it wouldn’t solve or fix anything. It’s a mere drop in the ocean. The bald and plan truth however is that the equipment in the Villa in particular is 20 years old, inefficient and technically past its end of life. It’s only due to the dedication of the tech team who keep patching it up that any shows have been happening for the past 4 years. In addition, contrary to some of the misleading crap being spoken in Tynwald yesterday - this is commercially used equipment and needs to be built and capable of delivering professional level results - not only for bands and comedians brought over, but also by the several hundred other private events - functions, conferences etc that use these buildings week in week out. If the investment wasn’t made, these venues would effectively go what is known as “Dark”, meaning EVERYONE using it would need to buy, bring or hire all of their own equipment and technical staff. This would result in two things happening simultaneously-1) all the decent UK/overseas acts would be very reluctant to come and 2) those that did would see a supplement of £10++ being added to each ticket, then who would moan? This investment of £1.6m however is basically 10p for every person using these venues over the next 10 years. If you don’t think it’s right to spend the money take a look in the UK at the number of towns that have lost their live music venues..would you rather we were like that?
  21. Utter bullshit. Virtually all acts from off island depend on using the in-house PA and lighting, as do promoters to keep costs down, which in turn aims to try to keep ticket prices affordable.
  22. Revolut is certainly making banks look like Dickensian monoliths..great service and also (I’d imagine) a perfect conduit for organised crime and money laundering..
  23. As it’s now December, if you wrote to Santa what would you wish for? Please contribute in true MF traditions.. 1) Find out the Liverpool Ferry Terminal is all a bad dream? 2) Be able to see your GP the same day? 3) Learn that Howard Quayle was actually the love child of Graham Ferguson-Lacey? 4) Get a letter from your bank to tell you they’re opening a new branch? 5)….. Over to you..
