a couple of folk on here and others n PM's have said  " you have to be a bit thick-skinned"  to be on the MF

I guess i am, because i will engage your post  ( even though you are trolling here/me )

1. My "motivation" is all mine for moving here and of course i know that public services cost money.  The Gov will do ok by  me by way of "consumption tax" (VAT and other taxes) . ie whatever i do, even moving here , the Gov will get their share.  I did not set the tax rates/criteria up for this country and everyone is free to benefit from them, the Gov is looking for ways to make up the deficit. Why? because the IOM is not the tourist centre that it once was and it will never be again,   airline travel then low-cost airline travel saw to that.  Hence they are changing the face of the island. You only have to look at the financial and online services based here to see the "changing face" of the island.   (sidebar:  are you sending similar "messages" to the banks, and other industries that have settled here ? )  sidebar2:  should the Island be  back as in  its "heyday" of pre war times ???

2. So yes i do want to move to the Island and no, i don't have to work  but i will have to operate within the prescribed tax rules ( like everyone else)  - You need to face the fact that the IOM Gov has set the island up as a low-cost tax entity . it has been done this way for a reason , they "need" to attract people to the island , whether you like it or not, its the future. If i stay where i am, i will pay tax to the Spanish Gov (then the Island gets nothing from me), or i could not do that. Afterall,  its my choice to stay or move away from here.  I may well, after i have settled on the Island, decide to startup a business ( Actually, there is a big chance of that happening), in which case i would need employees ( Island employees)   now i know  that's of little interest to you as you would prefer me and others like of me not to come here,  but maybe others on the Island would like the opportunity and the employment.

3.  Yes i am a biker, been riding nigh-on 40 years now and the TT is a unique event and for it to be on my doorstep, so to speak, is just epic !

4.  What you think about what i should or shouldn't do as regards to where i live is of no interest to me,  my original post did not solicit an answer  as to whether i should move to the island or not. i had already decided that i (we) would.   As to the comment "  if you chose your new home by more virtuous criteria than where requires its poor to subside you the most. "   you might want to take that up with the Government (they made the rules)  if you believe for any moment that me coming to the island will in anyway adversely affect those good folk you mentioned. i actually think it will be a net benefit for the Gov/Island. Why?  because i wont take anything from the Gov. The Gov will get more from me in the short term, and possibly a lot more in the medium term.

i trust the above will clear up your mis-understanding of..hmmm... well.. all of your points.

A lot of your terminology suggests you are already here!

Thankyou for the finance and history lesson. Just to correct a couple of points though.

Firstly not everyone is free to benefit from the tax rates /criteria here in the way you are. You mentioned the lack capital gains tax and the fact that you intend starting a company which would pay little or nothing in corporation tax.

Most people will benefit little from either of these and in terms of Income tax and NI have no choice whatsoever in how much they pay and pay very little or nothing less than they would in the other two countries you mentioned.

Secondly, you seem to believe that the low tax, financial sector of our economy is the future in the face of dwindling tourism and forty years ago you'd have been right (although still as morally dubious as you are today). In fact finance is now the dwindling industry and the future is still very much to be decided.

I'm glad you think you're a worthy economic migrant who will be of benefit to the good people of the island, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that one.

I'm also glad you like the TT and agree it is epic.

I also fully agree that the decision to move here is and rightly should be entirely your own, I was merely offering my experience of people who have done so for similar reasons. They rarely seem happy with the place and despite a good 40 years of them benefitting us we're still in the financial shit.

My "mistake" in my 2nd post  was to mention the dreaded "T" word  (tax) , i see that now. Why?  well it has "triggered" a couple of people,   it feels like many years of your problems all being focused in on me.  Wow.

Yes it did say i that i might start up a business , you chose to fixate on the Gov mandated Corporation tax aspect of that and yes that might be an incentive to think about doing just that ( those are the rules passed by the Manx Gov , not me, take it up with them if you don't agree with their policies) .  What about the employment that would be created , would that be of benefit to the Island? . I mean people coming to the Island, setting up businesses and creating employment surely that's not what the Island needs !

It seems to me that most of your issues concern things that your Gov has put in place (not me)  My suggestion would be, take it up with them.    Or Vote with your feet and leave (extreme, i know) if you dont like the Island rules and don't want to be a part of changing them.

re your comment "  In fact finance is now the dwindling industry and the future is still very much to be decided. "   You may well be correct on that one, time will tell  . One aspect of the future that (i believe) the Gov is pushing is Digital Tech , ie Blockchain based technology . If the Island could get a jump start on that ( and get it's collective head on board with it ) that would be a big big game changer for the Island for sure.

re your comment  I also fully agree that the decision to move here is and rightly should be entirely your own, I was merely offering my experience of people who have done so for similar reasons. i'm really hoping you dont work in the Island's Tourist dept or the Island's "New Business development dept" :D

i can't say for sure today that we will be "happy with the place"  only in time will i be able to say that. Watch this space!  heck, we haven't even moved there yet.  and re you last part of "we're still in the financial shit. "   You've spent the time writing in response to my OP,  have you spent any time coming up with solutions to help get the island out of the situation you have described?   Have you voiced them to your Gov?  do you want to be part of the solution or part of the problem? For me, i want to be a part of the solution if i can and i want to add to any community that i live in.

@finlo   Nope, i am currently in Spain ( but i like to as much research as i can) - the internet is great for that !

So in summary, you're going to move here, start a business that will solve our huge unemployment problem and protect the future of our economy with your "new" ideas ie. crypto currencies.

Here we go again!

No, in summary i am going to move there and watch the TT when its on, i am also going to ride my bike , walk my dogs and go out for fish n chips  and the odd curry.

i may also start some sort of business venture , later on down the line

read what i actually wrote    " the Gov is pushing is Digital Tech , ie Blockchain based technology"  - ie not me , but it's the Gov doing it !

In the meantime i will defer to your years of Island knowledge as to how you will solve  the " huge unemployment problem and protect the future of (the) our economy"

when are the next parliament elections?  put yourself down as a candidate  , you will have my vote!

on another thread i saw this discussed  , maybe this is contributing to the Island's "woes"

Woolley
There is a distinction between people moving here to swell the government workforce and those coming to work in private industry and employ others. The former cost and the latter contribute.

Rushen Spy
100% agreed. Unfortunately, the former massively (disproportionately) outnumber the latter.

Welcome.

Good on you Dave. Making a move anywhere is stressful but you’re choosing to make a big move but it looks as though you’ve done your homework.

We’re not dog unfriendly. We love dogs. Most except farm dogs are pets. You won’t find people with a lap dog and a guard dog though and one thing you will find is that when you lay your head down to sleep at night you will not be lulled into sleep by the cacophony of dogs howling from all over. In fact, you might find the quiet hard to get used to. You also won’t be able to go out at midnight for dinner! Something else to get used to. That said, you can eat out at any time between 6am and 9pm - constantly -in the streets mainly. Set mealtimes are becoming a thing of the past

The Manx are more like your Portuguese neighbours. Slow and melancholy. The only time they show unbridled joy is when they are full of ale. But they are solid and true and friends for life once you win them   over. As John said, we can sniff out a boaster a mile away and it doesn’t go down well. I do realise you’re defending yourself here against the mob but do keep in mind that a bit of humility here will get you more of what you want than playing the big ‘when I’.

You’ll easy find somewhere to live with dogs. Facebook is the place. There’s a group called Location Location Location. Look on there. Also make a few posts on the Isle of Man sites and you’ll soon find yourself sorted.

Hee’m oo!

That's a reference to the vastly over-manned, over-graded and thus over-paid IOM public service that exists in the form it does to maintain the delusion of statehood.

Simple example we have a Chief Constable on the same pay scale as, say, the CC of Greater Manchester.

It's a very expensive joke. Especially when you factor in the pension liability....

If you're planning on setting up a business when here (if MF trolls haven't discouraged you) there is a different visa possible - the Tier 1 Entrepreneur Visa.

You say that like it adds some credibility.

I think most people over here ( with the exception of that government) , have long ago learned to judge well heeled "when I's" by what they do rather than what they say.

Don't get me wrong,  despite the flack you are taking on this forum (admittedly a lot of it from myself) , you'd struggle to find a friendlier place to move to than here.

As ecobob rightly says, a little humility will go a long way here.

Good luck, Crypto. Ignore the negativity. It's a national pastime.

Lol. I did warn you.  Just didn't think you'd encounter it quite so promptly. ☺ And yes, lots of entrepreneurial types have arrived here to kick back over the years only to find the bug still bites and they soon find themselves working 16 hours a day on a new Manx business. The notion that poorer people are somehow subsidising the rich has always been a bone of contention that doesn't stand scrutiny.
