Think the peloton will throw him a bone? Hopefully he makes it through the mountains. It's all coming together, a lot of his main competitors are already out or seem to be off pace. A lot of sprint friendly stages this year and ones that he's won before. If he pulls it off, this will be the Tour De Cav. Most of the favourite (and Brit) GC contenders are also now out of the game. I'm not going to lie, I definitely thought his time had gone and he was painfully dragging out his retirement, but I'm genuinely surprised and pleased by this... 4 Quote
Anyone Posted July 7, 2021 Posted July 7, 2021 I don’t understand this cycling thing. But I do understand that Mark Cavendish is a superstar and should get a knighthood for his achievements which by anyone’s standards are quite remarkable and unlikely to be surpassed. And he looks like he might even surpass even those. An inspiration also I believe to masses of Manx born who are into the sport big time. That has to be a good thing. 2 Quote
TheTeapot Posted July 9, 2021 Author Posted July 9, 2021 (edited) Turn on your TV and (maybe) watch history be made. 30km to go, everything set up for a sprint, its about to get very fast. Edited July 9, 2021 by TheTeapot 1 Quote
Ghost Ship Posted July 9, 2021 Posted July 9, 2021 Where will they put the statue of him? Or will that have to wait for the prom to be completed (if ever)? 1 Quote

I watch it on ITV4 and I think their commentary is pretty good. (I was initially disappointed when they dropped the Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwin commentary team some years ago, but I actually think Boulting, Miller and Kennaugh are now better than they were). The one problem with ITV4 is that it's sometimes difficult to keep everything in context and know where everyone is, so I also follow it simultaneously on these two screens that are real-time (almost): Tour de France - Live race (letour.fr) and Tour de France - Live race (letour.fr) You can see where everyone is in terms of both time and on the stage profile. 1 Quote
Ghost Ship Posted July 14, 2021 Posted July 14, 2021 Catching up on some reading today and David Walsh had a mention for Cavendish in the Sunday Times sports supplement on 04 July (pp24 - 25). He'd been talking to Pippa York (formerly Robert Millar) and she's clearly a great fan of Cavendish's. York admires him because she doesn't regard him as part of a "system or manufacturing plant " like Team Sky or Ineos. She's very much of the opinion that for a few years it didn't much matter who was leader of those teams - whoever it was would win the Tour. (Not wholly sure I agree with that and she is perhaps slightly underestimating Wiggins, Froome, Thomas and Bernal - but who cares! Give me Cavendish over them any day!) Also a very exciting mountain-top finish today on stage 17. Great final climb and well worth watching the highlights tonight or watching last 60 - 90 minutes on itv hub. (Best to watch it not knowing the result if possible... ) Quote
TheTeapot Posted July 14, 2021 Author Posted July 14, 2021 Yeah, today's was good. That's a hell of a climb Quote
