Statement regarding this evenings incident at the Southern 100.

At around 6.50pm this evening, Tuesday 11th July 2023, a serious incident occurred during tonight’s qualifying session on the Billown Course in Castletown.

The incident involved two riders, a marshal and a spectator and it is with deep sadness that we regret to announce that this incident has resulted in two fatalities. We pass on our deepest sympathy to the families, loved ones, and friends of those involved.

At this time, we are unable to provide any further details of those involved in the incident and the current focus is to support those involved.

The Coroner of Inquests has been informed.

Please be aware there is a road closure in place from Castletown corner to Ballakaighen corner and it will be for some time. A further update will be provided in due course.

We would also ask the public not to speculate at this time.

Update as of 10:55pm on 11/07/2023.
Further to the previous road closure of the S100 Billown Circuit, the road between the A5 Castletown By-Pass Road through to but not including Ballakighen Corner will remain closed until at least 11am tomorrow morning, Wednesday 12th July 2023. This is to allow investigations to continue.
Access can be still be gained to Buchan and Castle Rushen School, as well as the S100 Campsite but this access will have to be via Castletown Square. Please be advised that we are aware this will now cause a large amount of traffic in this area, especially during morning rush hour. Therefore if you have the capability to walk to your destination, then we would advise this to avoid the expected congestion.
Access can also be gained on the A3 Malew Road which takes you to cross four ways as another available route to you. We have provided the below map containing blue dots on to assist with explaining the road closure to you.
Please be patient and expect that your journey may take longer than usual. Thank you.

I remember the 2007 TT incident where spectators and marshals were involved. A long and difficult investigation followed. If anything, scrutiny will be much higher today.

Thinking of all involved. The s100 is a tight family in every respect and hopefully will weather the storm.

The police are appealing for witnesses apparently quite a lot of spectators around the incident, horrible for them as well.   It does not do to speculate it is just an awful start to a friendly race meeting it will cast a long shadow for all involved.  I just hope the rest of the event goes off without any further casualties.
