No you haven't got the wrong one but it is a bit unfair as the guys right at the top will obviously be the ones on the big packages. You wouldn't really expect otherwise would you? You probably wouldn't expect anyone to take that sort of shit for much less either.

Yes, they have to put up with all sorts of shit like deciding between PG Tips or Tetley. I wouldn't put up with that for their salary.

I would say that in the private sector anyone stilling over a £500/600m annual budget would be earning considerably more than whatever the package was/is.

They shouldn't have a £500/600m annual budget. That right there is money that should be reimbursed to the taxpayer. All these public services they supposedly provide with that money, most of it goes on their salaries and not on services. I'd rather sack the lot of them, keep all my taxes and go private.

The link Chinahand posted is to the Governments detailed unaudited accounts. I think it is known as the light blue book. There is also the dark blue book which are the audited accounts and these split the figures into Group Accounts & Central Government. Central Government are basically the figures per Chinahand’s link. The Group are the figures with Statutory Boards etc included. The staff figures are on page 32. https://www.gov.im/media/1349384/iom-government-accounts-dark-blue-book-2014-15.pdf

The figure I found interesting/alarming, take your pick, is on page 6 where is state’s salaries & wages increased by £15.2 million. That is just under 4%. Now I have no issue with nurses, teachers etc getting pay rises but I am sure I have heard Bell & Teare state time & again that there would be no slash & burn approach but that the size & cost of government would be allowed to reduce overtime through natural redundancy. Additionally every time any department claims or requests a pay rise I am sure I have heard Bell get on his high horse and state that any such increases would only come as a result of redundancies as there would be no new money. i.e. if you received a pay rice it would in effect only be the result of the wages of the individual who was laid off being spread amongst those who were left.

Seems I was wrong and rather than the Government wage bill decreasing it is still increasing

I oversaw revenue spending of £1bn per annum as well as capital spend of £100m+ per annum and Government investments in excess of £1.5bn

And after wasting all that, I retired early on a fabulous pension and was honoured by the queen.

Not much "carrying the can" going on here.

My favourite most alarming figure is the head count of 7,874 meaning we pay and AVERAGE of £50,520 per full time post:

"The total personnel employed by Government Departments, including seasonal staff and Statutory Boards, is the equivalent of 7,874 full-time posts including contract posts."

Compared to 2008 every single salary level has seen an expansion in numbers:

.............................2015/2008

300,000-324,999 1/0

250,000-299,999 2/0

225,000-249,999 4/0

200,000-224,999 14/1

175,000-199,999 22/8

150,000-174,999 18/13

125,000-149,999 25/16

100,000-124,999 40/28

75,000-99,999 120/53

50,000-74,999 577/413

291 more people earning over £50K per year.

Assuming people earn the mid point in the salary bands the salary of the highest paid public servant has risen from £212,500 to £312,500 - a 47% increase.

Obviously there is wage inflation ... but it doesn't signal a decrease in bloat does it!

Outrageous. I'm so glad we've been shrinking the government headcount. God help us if we'd just let it carry on growing.

The 'chief officer group' has certainly looked after itself.

Lots of money sitting round this table.
