Manx Radio re Media Development Fund motion

Well, should we draw a line . . .  learn a £26million lesson . . . move on?

The Isle of Man Film Industry facilitated a lot of money coming to the Island. Some might suggest it left cleaner than it came. It looks like the Island took itself to the cleaners too in wanting to go all Hollywood.

I really take no notice what Shimmins says. He does nothing as well. He is ideal MHK material - USELESS. Kate Beecroft proposal was doomed to failure and I can’t see the PAC being any better. Skelly got a slating in the Vision On And TT World Series screw ups, and he got rewarded after all his wasting of taxpayers cash. What’s £26mil to IOMG? Spare Change - after all it’s not their money.

How many more times can we move on and learn lessons ! or rather not learn lessons, the amount of money wasted in the past twenty years by administrations is a scandal !

It is time it was made clear to those who make decisions with public funds that they will be held to account not to move seamlessly on to the next disaster !

One day we will have a proper enquiry about something and the truth will come out and people will be hung out to dry ...... and then I woke up !!!

It is astounding that this keeps cropping up. Does anyone really believe that the film industry did not facilitate a lot of money coming to the Island over many years? You have to look at all sides of the equation. Cinemanx, Pinewood, share dealings, film expenses, film sales and VAT. If we had never set up Isle of Man Film we would be even further in the mire than we are now, that is for sure.

If we lost the quoted £26M in reserves/cash, surely the acceptable benchmark would be, did it bring in £26M too across the economy, ie break even? Have we any figures to show this or was it all "intangible, indiscernible benefits" as we've been told? (Because they shouldn't be either as far as public funds are concerned, IMHO).

If it did, fine. If it didn't then £26M would have alleviated a lot of the cutbacks that we're now experiencing. Personally I wouldn't and didn't trust Bell and Teare further than I could spit them.

I thought Eddie Teare said we made a shed load of money out of Pinewood? Was that...er...incorrect?

In 2012, £24m was used to buy shares in Pinewood Studios.  This made a profit.

A further £25m was given CinenaNx in a deal with Pinewood Studios to produce films.  This didn't make a profit.

To be fair to Shimmins when has any of these inquiries ever held anyone to account ?  We all know what happened.........but will Bell and Teare ever be held to account ?  Nah. There will be a report, lots of tut tuts and then it will be put on the shelf until its forgotten.  No one will be any the wiser, the politicians concerned have all retired or been emptied.................and £26m has gone up in smoke.  That's about the nub of it.

ah,  the magic word, VAT.   some creative accounting saw us getting far more VAT back than we were actually entitle to (  not just film shit ) and the rug got pulled with the help of big mouths boasting about it.  without the VAT angle there would have been no film industry to start with over here.

An inquiry should answer those questions.

At the moment there are a lot of unknowns. If an inquiry finds that indeed it was £26million well spent, then super dooper.

and they all know it wouldn't show that so lets not have one instead.
