We have a body called the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) with a political member, a member being the operative word. I don’t expect miracles but when prices are increases are civil servants employed to look after the consumer(s) monitoring prices and if necessary speaking to the retailer, if only for an understanding as to why the price has risen - could there be a local/manx factor added on to the increase? It is freedom of choice in the end as to where consumers purchase from. In many cases they buy due to location and ease, and what they know, and some retailers take advantage of that fact.

Ditto.

There's the island premium that we all expect to pay and then there's taking the piss!

Taking the piss is something that's long gone on but there are other factors too. The sheer cost of getting stuff here (Steamie freight charges, soon to be augmented by whatever repayment arrangements are put together for the Liverpool Terminal etc), big "old money" premises rents where applicable and Govt and LA tax takes for businesses and their employees.

Govt largely drives up the cost of living here via its various facets and connections and it would be interesting to see in hard figures precisely what the percentage and scale of it is in respect of the cost of living on the Island.

Trouble is there is no elsewhere to go to an Aldi or a Lidl would calm down the present rises they certainly keep an anchor on prices over the water.     Perhaps the government could encourage one of these low cost stores to venture to our shores.

You are right in your observation. I would add that Home Bargains, a large UK chain selling goods similar to Wilko, including foods, have a planning application submitted in Guernsey for a large store, include garden centre. Perhaps Guernsey are more accommodating and not as narrow minded as IOM? Sadly any other store wanting to open on the IOM would face the wrath of Shopshite.

The Government were not helpful when Tesco wanted to expand their store as I remember.

It’s worth noting that Guernsey has a smaller population than the IOM. The Government doesn’t want any new retailers from the UK, it has a protectionist mentality, prevent competition at all costs.

In what way would they face  the wrath of shopshite?
