woolley
Can never get my head around those saying amalgamate small authorities to make more horrors in the image of Douglas City Council, or hand everything over to central government. Either of these courses of action would enlarge the bureaucracy, encouraging even more red tape and empire building. I do support the single occupancy discount, however.

So much for the "economies of scale" argument. Exactly. They don't have large town halls full of staff and management building empires. Small is beautiful when it comes to cost. I can understand overburdened ratepayers who pay for the excess thinking that if there was an all-Island rate they would make big savings, but they wouldn't. Their rates might come down a (very) token amount, but the rest would rise astronomically, making this latest rates round look like a carnival.

Small is beautiful indeed, particularly when you provide only refuse collection as a service.
Amadeus
Let’s be honest: it’s time for radical reform and to get rid of all LAs, but how do you ensure a central solution is more efficient?

You start from scratch. You ensure it just does the essentials. You ensure that it is funded equitably. You ensure that it had little to no connection with the current IOM Government structures.
