Pictish is generally thought to be a Celtic language for example and 'British' is usually applied to the pre-Roman inhabitants generally. The genetics is complicated and still changing. It's true the Island and its dependencies were never technically independent under the Norse, being nominally under the rulers of Dublin and then Norway and effectively under the influence of England.
